Man has to agonize before he will

human woe- Although the last
world war was regarded as econom
ic in its origin, a closer inspection
of the underlying motives will re
veal the race element so studiously
overlooked by our historians. The
nation of race superiority domin
ates the thinking and planning of
the German people. This notion is
deeply imbedded in the German
mind and motivates much of his at
titude towards the present world.
Under the kaiser who lies dead in
Doom today, Germany arose to one
of the most commanding positions
of any modern nation. It grew res
tive under the world dominations of
Great Britain and the first world
war.
It is true that the sta&es in the
war were economic in many ways:
but underlying this drive for econ
omic advantage was the deeper no
tion that Germany's right to power
resided in its superior race. In
other words. Nietzsch'g superman
was German; and by reason of bis
superiority should rule the earth.
L'nderlying the present war is
this same superior race complex.
Hitler is expressing in a rabid way
what was only faintly expressed by
the Germans of the first world war.
It is going to take a lot 0f hum
an evolution to evolute out of the
human mind the notion of race sup
eriority. It is going to take a lot
more evolution to evolute out of

wars. Jesus Christ went to the
heart Of the matter when he said
that mankind must have first of all
a change of heart before there can
be a change of human fortunes.
The peace we humane seek grows
out of a peaceful and brotheriy j
heart. We are trying to have peace
without brotherliness and it simply i
cannot be done. As I said in my
Baptist World Alliance address in
Atlanta a few months ago. “this
world must be brotherized or it will
be brutalized ’. It canot be broth
erized so long as there is the notion
of race superiority among the na
tions of the earth
It is well that we understand that
behind all that itler is doing is the
notion that the German race should
rule by reason of its superiority.
What is more, our own country is
facing a two ocean war. Our prob
lem would be considerably simpli
fied if we had Japan for an ally in
stead of enemy. But it is a matter
of record that only a few years ago
we flaunted into Japan's face the
dictum that darker peoples were in
ferior and that she as one of thes -
darker peoples was to be denied e
quality under our immigration laws.

with Hitler if such alliance promis

ship. It is one of the most appall
ing prospects that we are being

between victory and defeat in a
war for national existence. But
our vaunted notions of race super
iority crucified one of this nation's
most vital opportunities.
If Hitler wins the battle of the
Atlantic h° will win it by reason of
our being too busy with Japan in
the Pacific. The tragedy of Avar!
The greater tragedy of war based
upon an ideology which has no
scientific standing. Let us not for
get the diagnosis while bewailing:
the symptoms of war. This is but
the beginning of sorrows that rac
ism is bringing upon the earth.
