MUSE DRAMA GOLD TO PRESENT THREE ACT PLAY AT URBAN LEAGUE MAY 29, 1942 After a successful season of one act performances, the Muse Drama Guild closes the season with a three act comedy. "George and Margar et” by Gerald Savory at the Urban League ./Auditorium. Friday, May 29. "George and Margaret” lives up to the reputation of current English humor for amiability and mildness. The New York Sun critic said this about the play: ‘-It tickles as it goes—you will laugh your throat sore—it blooms engagingly.” The New York Journal and American said: "It wil take a good play to raise that much laughter again and good luck to equal the amiable, ir revelevant but unfailing merriment of ‘George and Margaret’.” Dedicated to the principle that everything is for the best, it revolv es around a crazy but comfortable family of five. Mother Alice, play ed by Mrs. Doreene Holliday, is a congenital fuss budget. Father Malcolm, portrayed by Mr. Saybert C. Hanger, is so absent-minded he verges on the sublime. Daughter Frankie.ac ted by the attractive Miss Doris Ware, suffers from youthful restlessness. Mr. Richard Lewis, who has attracted attention at the Community Playhouse with his portrayal of bit parts, acts in the role of Brother Dudley and quotes literature at odd moments. Brother Claude, who does sitting up exercises and builds houses, ia play ed by Mr. Jesse Carter, another promising young actor. This Week In Religion and Thought BY ROBT. L. MOODY OBJECTIVES OF CITY GOVERNMENT This week is vert- important to every thoughtful citizen. Many people believe that participation in national elections are the most im portant but local and municipal el ections have a more direct affect upon the life of each citizen. The objectives of each city govern ment determines the functions cf each department Every citizen should be healthy, therefore, the city sees that foods and water are kept pure. Contagious diseases are watched and controlled by quar antine and free clinics. Good streets, efficient fire protection, ade quate schools, recreation and reas onable public utilities are the goods of an efficient city government. All of these services are essential to the welfare of every city. We pay taxes for these services and vre need honest, capable and fair mind ed officers for these jobs. We shall expect these qualities in the seven men elected to control our city fer the next three years. We also ex pect them to appoint other officials that possess similar qualities. LET’S GET ORGANIZED!!! BY GEORGE T. EDWARDS I have heard many comments a bout this war among my people, but there is one point of view that I feel is very dangerous, and it hap pens to be one that is expressed by a great many Negroes. Before our entrance into the war, some of our people felt that it would be a good thjng if Hitler were to de feat Great Britain. An editorial written along these lines was carr ied in one of our leading Negro weekly papers. It is true that the people who have this point of view have a very good reason for it; namely. Great Britain’s treatment of the Colonial People. But can we as a freedom-loving people hope that Hitler’s will defeat Great Britain? I say no. Will the defeat of England better the condi tions of the Colonial People? Again I say no. I cannot help but wonder if the j people who feel this way think that Hitler will treat the Colonial peo ARE TOR AS “PEPPY” AS Y00 USED TO BE? SMITH) WE. 6458 WMMMMaMMMMaM This writer owes Mr. Felix Met oyner an apology for not making mention of the very extensive trip he made through some of the sou thern states and also the great su gar cane and rice state of Louisiana —his former home. After the trip he returned to the Wizard country where he could be better satisfied, although he was well surrounded with what it tokes to go places and do things. z pie any better than Great Britain has. I’m afraid that a man who is determined to rule the world would be far core ruthless than even Eng land has been in its rule over the Colonials. There is no question in my mind but that the conditions of these people would become rapidly worse under Hitlerism. The time for us to hope that Great Britain will become defeated will be when the Colonial people are fighting for their own liberat on against British tryranny and op pression. Today jn the United States our theme must be National Unity for the purpose of defeating Hitler and Hitlerism, not only abroad but at home. As Black Americans we know that no section of the Amer ican People has contributed more to the growth of our country than we have. The blood of Black America has been shed in every- war that we have fought. Today all freedom loving people have a job to do, and that is to defeat the enemy that would enslave us all. and we are go ing to do our part to win this wav. I do know, however .that we aic not ging to stop with the defeat of Hitler until we have won ail the democratic rights that we have been struggling for so long. "When people tell us today that' we should hope for the defeat of Great Britain, we must prove to them that they are only asking that we lose what few freedoms we do enjoy in this country. Our very ex istence as a free people is depend ent upon victory by the United Na tions. And we as Negro people must do everything we can to see that ibe tnjted Nations are victorious in this war.
