More than thirty years have passed since the organization was formed. It was. at first, by nec essity, a centralized body, suprem • power being placed in the Board of Directors. Because it was en gaged in a fight for civil liberty and local branches might he sub ject to irresistable pressure in backward communities, justificat ion may be pleaded. Too case of Chambers vs. Flor ida which is found in late reports of the Supreme Court cf the Unit ed States is one of the b,st illus trations in legal annals if the i;d elity of the United Scites O.urt to the constitution of the country. « iiar.i^rs and thr^e c;ho- young 1 men were arrested in June of 1933 and charged with the murder cf a white man. There was no evid-) ence of their guilt. By torture,, they were made to confess. Th(>.' j were brought to trial and fouo 1 guilty and were sentenced to de'-Ur. They appealed to the Supreme Court o fthe United States and the case was reversed and s nt bac to Florida for a new trial. The Colored men were again convict ed an dthe cas^s was appealed ard reversed. They were convicted a third time and sentenced to death. But the United States Supreme Court again #reversed the Florida court, holding that no conviction could stand based upon a confes sion obtained by duress or force of any kind. On March 10th, 1942, the case was again called for trial in the District Court of Florida and the trial judge freed the defendants, remarking that the U. S. Supreme Court had held no conviction could be valid based on a forced confi>s- i sion. Two Negro lawyers, McGill of Jacksonville, Florida and Ransom of Washington, D. C. conducted the defense from the beginning to the end of this case. The value of this accomplishment should not be lost on the Colored People. the mesage for our first serv-ce. Rev. Trago O. Rev. Burckhaddt was also as usual pres ent to encourage the good work. The choir was made up of the var ious churches, but we also was blessed by having a company of eight young men who sang three numbers of spirituals, which rec eived many appaulds from the au dience. This company of singers were made up of George Butcher, Ernest Wilson of the famous Wil son quartette, Gardner Brown, Hallie, Johnny Reed, Cecil White bear. Aaron Knowles and William Butcher.
