P-EETS THE CIO AND THE NEGRO WATCH THIS COLUMN EACH WEEK FOR THE TRUTH A-j BOUT THE NEGRO AND THE CIO; DIRECT "ROM H. Q . WASHINGTON. DC. — «*** The CIO is an organization of all American workers, united as its constitution and its leaders declare ‘regardless of race, creed, color cr nationality’' for th» purpose of im proving tile living and working standards of all Americans and for the purpose of maintaining and expanding democracy and free dom. Today the CIO stands with ev ery other American and with lib erty-loving people everywhere a gainst the murderous attack of Hitler, Japan and their Axis pup : pets; determined to defend the right of all people to live and to wor kout their own destiny in free dom. The CIO has always recognize:', that all people—"regardless of race, creed, color or nationality’* —must stand together to defeat common enemies a ad achieve com mon aims. Hatred and disunity between peoples is the greatest weapon Hitler fcas found in his bloody march to conquest, just as it has always been the greatest weapon of the exploiter and the anti-labor politician. The resistance of the nations fighting Hitler and the Axis de rog^gg-i “bootsie ther ih awful worried, he read whede the gov’ts gonna charge every mart, woman an child fo hundred bucks, ond he aint had his hands on ten dollars in the last five years”. — — pends on how well they stand *o gether, fighting as one. The reals-, ance of our own people to Hitler and his Japanese allies depends cn how w. 11 we stand together in our own country—Negro and white, Jew and Gentile, native and for eign born. The CIO was founded in 1935 cn the strength of this principle the principle that all workers ae- j serve equal consideration, the prin i ciple that all workers must units j on equal terms to get it. T heprinciple is not only demo cratic. it is also a matter of com- j non sense. For many generation} anti-labor employers were able to j keep American workers apart on racial and religious prejudices. .As a result they were able to exploit them much more easily, on the well known policy of divide an I misrule. DISCRIMINATION OUT The men who founded the CIO in 1935 knew this, and they deter- < mined to build an organization1 that would rob the exploiters of the weapon of disunity. The un ions they headed were industrial unions, where every worker had an equal voice, where every work er got equal consideration. They had a long history of re jecting all forms of discrimination in t^eir own ranks. where Negro workers were active side by side with their white fellow-m enters. What is more, they were strong unions, because they were not split up into tiny groups, that fought with each other rather than fight ing for their common interest. The new organization, the CIO, ; de-ermined to keep out every form of discrimination that had held -he labor movement hack before. It , had to keep out racial discrimina tion just as it had to keep out j craft disemnination. The modem labor movement realized from ex- : perience that you could no mor exclude workers because of the color of their skin than you could exclude them because of differenc es in their occupations—if you wanted a strong labor movement. How well this principle has worked is seen in the fact -bat, there were fewer than 125.000 Ne groes in the labor movm-nt he- I fore the CIO. Today, after six years, there are more than 500.0C0 j —most of them in the CIO. ■ To he continued next week. IMPORTANT—You should read every line.) Y.—I saw One of your col umns and I decided that I would : like to write to you. fm in love ’ with a lady and I am buying her a suit of furniture. Do you think it will be necessary for me to ke>-p paying on it or quit? Ana: Didn't you buy the furn I iture and have it sent out to her ? Then, it seems to me that it is your duty to finish paying for it. If you don’t. I doubt seriously if your lady friend will spend any more of her time with you. You actually bit off more than yon could chew.... if you feel you feel you cannot pay for the furni ture you had better be man enough ! to tell her so and ask her aanst ! ance but don’t just stop paying on the suit altogether as it will mal: - her angry with you. Worried: My husband <*nd I have been staying with his father and mother. I have tried to make him get us a small place alone but he wants to get a larger house so we can all live together. Help me to decide what is best to do? Ans Your husband doesn't seem to know how to adjust his life in order to live without his par- nts. He is a good man and my suggestion in your case is to allow him to get a larger place and bring hjs parents to live un der your roof. .. .but. . . .insist up on One thing. Ans: You know very well that she hasn't. Before you will ever find happiness and contentment with your wife you are going to have to learn to control your jeal ous disposition. Jealousy alone nas wrecked more happy marriages than any other thing. You had better start appreciating your wife for her very fine virtues and stop trying to find something wrorg. R- C.
