Mr. Ethridgp pleaded press ure of work on his publication a the reason he submitted hi3 res ignation to the President, who in turn accepted it with deepest re grets. Although he is no longer chaT man of the committee, Mr. Eth ridge remains as a member, al though a new executive order wil' soon be issued increasing the number of members in order to in-1 elude Etheridge. Dr. M&cLean, originally from the University of Minnesota, has made an enviable record in his one year as president of Hampton and has brought about more innovat ions in that time than wpie thought possible. Because of this work, he was highly thought of by the President in considering a suc cessor for Mr. Etheridge. Dr. MacLean, an educator of the new school, is not a “soft touch" by any means and has frequent! surprised his associates and school officials by his forthrightness and outspoken attitude. His assumption of the chairman ship of the committee means the work will continue as it has in the past and a new and vigorous pro * secution of every possible effort is assured. Frequently, the educator has been seen in Washington conferr ing with officials at various spots in the past few weeks and when his name was first mentioned as Etheridge’s successor .there was some doubt that he would be ac cepted by the President. But his credentials cleared without diffic ulty and he assumed full control on Wednesday. SUBSCRIBE NOW! HOSPITAL Knoxville, Tenn., February 20- - (by Dr. O. B. Taylor for ANP) Through the efforts of the Ease Tennessee Hospital association, Negro physicians and dentists have been placed on equal basis with white medics at the Knoxville I General hospital. The association, which sponsors the building of tbe Negro unit at othe general hospit- j al through a $50,000 grant from | the Rosenwald fund and an action I against the hospital in securing for Negro physicians tbe unsup ervised privileges once accorded only to whites. The unit was completely and fully equipped in 1935, but the hospital refused to accept Negro physicians On the same status as I whites. First of the Negro physicians to perform a major operation in the unit was Dr. S. M. Clark, presid- j ent of the association ,who was the leading spirit in the fight fo: equal rights at the municipal hos > pital. Without supervision, Dr Clark and his son, Dr. Hubert Clark of Hubbard hospital at Nashville, performed a successful iperation a few days after the I court had handed down a decision in favor of the association. In extending this equality of rights, the court declared, “No regularly licvensed physician in the state of Tennessee can be de prived of his right, regardless of race color or creed, to practic'. medicine and surgery in any tax supported hospital in the aforesaL’, state, unsupervised, so long as ho abides by the reasonable rules and regulations governing such hospit als.” .JACKSON 0288 FIDELITY STORAG.5S Van < «j I oral an-J I M n v I V r, T107 Howard.
