AFTER THE WAR, WHAT?
In the midst of our campaign to
win opponents in the war on Naz
ism, it is called an unmixed evil;
the practices of the democracies,
only good...Neither assertion is
wholly true. The simple trut.a is
that more young men in Germany
have opportunities under Nazism
than they ever enjoyed under the
rule of the Emperor or the Rep
ublic. More of them have moved
nearer equality of opportunity
than an equal number have attain
ed in the so-called democracies.
And after the war is over, unless
the victors, which we believe wilf
be the democracies, make opport
unities the common lot of all men
and women in their borders, Naz
ism will not have been beaten...
Already Nazism has made its
Impression on our society and e
conomy ..The old England has
passed away; the slums and squai
or in which the workers lived be
fore the present war will never be
again; India, long exploited and
degraded, will be a freer and bet
ter land and her millions will en
joy opportunities for human ad
vancement they have not known
for more than two thousand years;
Russia will build on the ruins of
her empire and dictatorship a free
republic, and the masses of the
lands which lie beyond the west
ern sea. will be able to embrace

THE RUSSIAN SYSTEM
For many years stories have
been written about Red Russians.
Nearly all of them maligned ano
belittled Russia and her form cf
government. These sjtories des
cribed an unhappy, ignorant Deo
ple; immorale, irreligious, brutal
and hateful. Their economic sys
tem was said to be such as to cre
ate for the people nothing but
misery.
Less than a year ago, Germany
invaded Russia and she resisted
and we now know that her res st
ance was superb. Her army stop
ped Hitler's legions cold, then
counter-attackerf and has the
mighty German army on the dc
fensive and in retreat.
The whole story about Russia is
gradually unfolding. Her people
are united; her economic system
has stood the strain of war, arid
soldiers and civilians alike are
willing to die by the millions to
preserve the Russia of today: the
system which until recent!/ we
have been taught to despise.
Our dream of democracy, a
dream we have not seen come t*ce
may be superseded by a new soc
ial system which will apply in
practice what we long promised
and constantly denied. Russia is
for all Rusians who subscribe to
the system under which they live
and have their being .
The leader of the Rusian state
Is an able, highly educated man,
possessing supreme power, nec
essary in the Russia of the Rev
olution. But after this war is ov
er, we believe the example of this
great country will become the s'ib
ject of study all over the wor'.l.
Hre we shall witness for the first
time, on a large scale, the full
fruition of democracy.
America may observe with both
profit and safety the example of
this people for whom we now ex
tend recognition and for whom his
tory will record that Hitler was
beaten on the plai.is of Russia
and that there civilization was
largely saved.
Russia was ready for Hitle\—
Was she also right?
THE RED CROSS AND

Recently national officers of the
American Red Cross advised the
National Association for the Ad

COLORED PERSONS would not
be permitted to donate their blocd
, to the so-called “Blood Bank” to
be used for transfusions for wounc

reason of loss of blood. As a re
sult of this curt refusal, as un
wse as it was unnecessary, color

They are saying, and rightly, that
if they must go on the battleficd,
as they are doing now and give
their blood to save the hides of the
very officials who charge thal
their blood is not fit to aid wound
ed comrades, the Red Cross shouid

I have been on saf eg round.
Surely, we are not going to wir
' the war this way. Already, we
have lost much to Japan because
we viewed the people of that lani
| as “inferior". We insisted they
had few planes, a poorer army
and no courage; that once they
faced white men they would flee,
in disorder. The Red Cross wojIJ
regard their blood unfit for the
“Blood Bank”, just as they re
gard the blood of Negroes.
Let us stop being silly and make
a united effort to win this war.
Before it is won, much blood will
flow from the veins of white and
, black Americans, and the color of
blood will be red.
Will the Red Cross please take
notice and iproceed intelligently to
do its duty.
DONALD M .NELSON
Mr. Donald M. Nelson was ap
pointed recently by President
Roosevelt to direct the war prod
uction effort Only praise has re
sulted from the appointment, so
, long demanded and so long cvr
! due.
Our hope is that Mr. Nelson will
| get things done, in time,
i His record justifies the belief he
! will do just that and from this
point onward, we will have action,
action, action, and win the victory.,
We have been toid again and a
gain we could win this war and go
on “with our social reforms ”, for
geting that if Hitler wins this wa
we will be bereft of all forms, let
alone reform.
The coming of Mr. Nelson to Sis
great responsibilities to produce,
marks the final turning point in
the world war.
Meanwhile, we have learned //o
can’t beat something with nothing.
THE COUNTY ATTORNEY’S
OFFICE
The County Attorney is an im
portant official. It is his duty to
prosecute all persons within the
county who are accused of crime,
and to see that none is prosecut

law In addition the County At

of Douglas. He is required to ad
vise county officials as to their le
gal rights and duties in relation to
county affairs. The deputies in
the office of the County Attorney
are to do likewise.
For many years the County At
torney and his deputies have been
permitted to engage in private
civil practice to a large extent;
sometimes, it is said, at the ex
pense of county service. Be that
as it may, the County Attorney
should devote his whole time to
the County business. His deput

The secret of the remarkable

they are still in demand every

although more than thirty-five
years on the market, is still the

for this is because it not only
