Calling All Americans.. (by J. Westbrook McPherson) i Now with the United States fac ing the greatest crisis in its his tory, a substatntial majority of the largest element of its citizens Negroes who comprise one tenth of the population of the Nation, are unable to serve our country as it should be served in its dire need This is true because, in the fi.-st place, large numbers of Negroes in the south have been kept in tot m ■ XMAS GREETINGS A-B BUFFET 1616 NORTH 24th ST. . Con sequently, many Negroes who aie now in the army are absolutely worthless even as Buck privates, where it becomes necessary that written orders be issued, because these unfortunates can neither read nor write. Many more Ne groes in the south, where most Negroes live, have been stunted in the growth and development of their abilities because they have been forced to attend schools which have been deliberately kept sub-standard and inferior to even the standard of education provid ed for most whites in the south. Some of these “schools” stand as a living disgrace to the word— “school”. In the north, in many instances, Negroes have suffered from the lack of inspiration and the type of personal interest they would have received if qualified and competent Negroes had been included on the teaching staffs of the mixed school systems o? that pai* of the country. Negroes are handicapped in their desire to serve in the pro duction of the necessary imple n ents of war, because for over a period of more than fifty tears they have suffered being system atkally excluded and eliminat'd ft cm jobs in the industry of the United States. Consequently, comparatively few Negroes nave either the necessary experience uf qu-i’Mciitions to rran the •• sat ing places in defense product: n. Your Electric Service Is GOOD . . . and CHEAP ★ SEE YOUR DEALER OR NEBRASKA POWER COMPANY « ■ ..r ■■ Seme labor unions that vrtual'.y I control most defense jobs in in dustry make it impossible for Ne j groes to get these jobs by stub 1 bornly refusing union member ship to Negroes. Within the Government itself, Negroes successfully pass all ex I aminations and other civil service j requirements set up by the govern • ment to insure the hiring of only ■ the best qualified. They receive notice of their success and an or ! der to report for work. But, alas, when they report for work, they are told by a surprised official that he thought the applicant was white—that Negroes are not want ed on such jobs. In the army, Negroes are corn fined to segregated divisions wherein those who are capable are denied the opportunity of serving as commissioned officers, with a few rare exceptions. While the United States navy states officially that it is facing the dilemna of having more ships to be manned than it has men to man them, and annouces its need for ten thousand additional re cruits, Negroes are seeking to en list are told that there are no pos itions in the navy for Negroes other than those positions in which they are now serving (messmen). Another official of the navy ex plained it thus: That the navy car. not afford to admit Negroes in large numbers because if it did, the type of Negroes who would, enlist would be so superior in train ing and ability to the type of whites who are willing to join, that it would be necessary to give Negroes important posts in the navy and Negroes would domin- i ate the navy. Thus we have one of the chief obstacles in the path of the great est effort of all times to achieve national unity in America. Common sense, then is calling all Americans to do their part in removing this serious handicap. Negroes must realize that this re sult is at least partly their own fault in that as citizens they have not exerted themselves as a whole more fully in the battle for the an nihilation of the forces which have produced this unhappy situation. In this emergency, the greatest experiment in self government, and democracy every made by man is on trial. Whether the A merican way of living is to sur vive, depends upon the outcome' of this crisis. Negroes must real ize that with all the short comings of democracy in America, where the Negro is concerned, Negroes in America still are best treated I of any of the darker races in the 1 whole world. Barring none in any 1 other country. Negroes must real | ize mat me united states oi Am erica gives to all its minorities a | beter chance than any other gov-1 eminent in the wo rid.... to win the unlimited rights, privileges and duties of citizenship, whether the minority be jewish, Catholic, Negro, organized labor or what not. The greatest opportunity tor minority groups in the world is wrapped up in the ramparts we watch. Any and all contention to the contrary is pure tommyrot and disastrous thinking. Therefore, Negroes everywhere 1 in all walks of life must turn ev j ery stone, must seize every oppor tunity to batter down the exisiting • barriers between Negro American^ and the opportunity to serve our ■ government. For, Negroes in A merica constitute the largest min ority group in the land, and as such, they number more than all the Irish in Ireland or all the Jews in the world. It is not proper that the best government in the world be deprived of this much of its po tential man-power. Statistics show in time of war the death rate from tuberculosis rises in leaps and bounds. In 1918, the second year of the first World war, the state of Nebraska ] saw the greatest numbers of: deaths from tuberculosis that she | has ever known. Only by the, most intense work can we keep our death rate from rising. Ninety-five percent of the Christ mas Seal funds collected in Ne braska will remain in the state to be used in fighting tuberculosis during 1942. Fifty percent re mains in the community where it is raised and only five percent go es to the national association for educational and research work . Thousands of Nebraskans have given liberally of their time and money in these annual Christmas Seal drives and it is these public spirited citizens who make possible the Nebraska Tuberculosis Asso ciation’s aid to sufferers from the white plague. The modest but a mazingly effective fund-raising effort brightens the lives of those in need of this care. i Do You Want • • • • r longer hair Sj Then try this SYSTEM.
