REVIEWING THE SPORTS —BY JOHN BEAN— Our good friend and former coach at Lincoln High school in Kansas City, Mo., Edward Gaines writes in from Detroit to tell us that William “Bill” Watson, for mer Michigan University great athlete is now a member of the Detroit Metropolitan police force. He has already received precinct citations for meritorious police work, and will be the main stay of the police track team of 1942. • This guy Gaines is a modest fel lovtf-for years he has been a j mainstay for the police team. When we were tloing prep work at LHS. in KC. Edward Gaines came down from Western State Teach ers College, Kalamazoo, Mich., to Pull our athletic dePartment out of the Basement of the our confer ence He did just that, too. Gain es brought with him an athlete re cord that equalley that of any col lege athlete. He use to place a dime on the top of a hurdle and take it off with the sole of his track shoe without touching the hurdle top. His broad jump style was that of the Dehardt Hubbard, the world’s greatest broad jumper also a son of the University of Michigan. If our memory is true to us Gaines was the only boy in a Michigan high school that ever beat the Great Eddie Tolan in the doshes. We shall never for get the time that Edward got his arm broke. He was puting our team through a stiff football drill. Homecoming time was near and Gaines wanted to have our team in Notre Dame shape. One of our backs wasn’t plowing through a guard like Coach thought he should. Coach received the ball, head down, legs working like Joe Louis series of punches —he shot into the line. We found the ball and after a search we found Coach Gaines under the big 245 pound guard with a broken arm. Everyone went back to the locker room in teetotal silence. Edward Gaines is crack officer in the Juv enile Division of the Probate Court in Detroit, Mich, where he and his beautiful wife live. I am sure you can if you go about it in the right way. * ________ A- S- M.—Should I take the money that I have saved and pay off this mortgage and get this old home place or what do you advise? Ans: I can’t see how you could profit by assuming this great re sponsibility. The mortgage am ounts to $1400, and the place really isn’t worth it. Let it go • • • • take your earnings and make the change to the north that you have been wanting to make so very long. N. K. F-—My daughter and I can’t get along. Continue on and a void her as much as possible - - do not worry about her too much for in a few months she is going to see things quite differently. I B- B—I’m writing to you now for advice. I’m in love with a high school graduate- He doesn’t seem to love me. If I were to win his love I am sure it will make me a better girl. Tell me where his heart is right now? Ans: His interests aren’t cen tered on any one girl right now.. there are bigger things for him to think obout..he is trying desper ately to establish himself in the business world- I do think with your very attractive disposition and self you could win him--but don’t throw yourself at his feet Arrange to be thrown in his com pany, even though you may not be w*ith him... keep yourself charm ing and alluring and he will be at tracted by you no doubt. I. M. K.—I am a married wom an and mp husband stays out with another man’s wife every night He curses e and fights me when I get after him about it- Does he love me or her? Ans: Right now he seems to think that he is madly in love with this other woman, but I feel confi dent that he is only infatuated. It will all blow over in time. The best thing for you to do is to stop saying anything at all to him a bout the woman-••-give him free rope for awhile and let him get her out of his system altogether.
