SOUTH— At Tech field Friday afternoon was the most interesting football game that could be played. Boys were on the field in kick and rec eiving formation— the whistle (blew and South kicked to Tech. Tech’s Mike Dibiase received the ball on his thirty five yard line and moved up to his forty before being hit by South’s hard charg ing line, It was Tech’s ball and first in ten for the Maroons. Com ing out of the huddle the boys were hot for a touchdown, Gilbert comes over the ball, it’s an end run for a first and ten, and the Maroons are on the march. After fifty yads of hard diving Williard Howard, Tech ace back, receives the ball from center for an off tackle drive good for ten yards and a touchdown for the Maroons. Bud Freeman replaced How*ard for the extra point, the kick converg ed as the quarter ended score,— Tech 7, South O. SECOND QUARTER Tech kicked off to South—R>se of South carried the ball to his forty-five yard line when it was first and ten for the Packers, Ar vin of South tried his own right end for no gain. The next play Arvin tries another end run but was hit hard by Tech’s right tackle Mike Dibase. A fumble, and Tech recovers Arvin’s fumble and it is the Maroons ball on the Parkers 40 yard line, first in ten and the* Maroons are on the March again,. Gilbert comes out over the ball, th" ball snaps and goes to Vacanti, a reverse to Howard that was good for forty yards and six more points for the Maroons. THIRD QUARTER Tech kicked off to South, South carries the ball to their twenty five yard line where it is first and ten for the Packers. South was trying hard to score on the hard fighting Maroons but the stub born Maroons forced the Packers to kick from their thirty yard line —It’s Tech’s ball on the fifty yd. line. BETWEEN THE LINES (by Dean Gordon B. Hancock) OUR CONQUERED COUNTRY Ours is a conquered country! The Germans have conquered this country just as truly as they have conquered Belgium or Holland. The Belgians have been conquered physically and this country has been conquered spir itually. In fact, ours is the more trag ic conquest, for the simple reason that no man is captured completely until his spirit is captured. The spirit of this country is captured and let us make no mistake about it. Our liber ties are assailed, our freedom is threat ened, our great President is maligned in his high and holy task of unholding the honor of his country. Our great an vaunted democracy is spurned, our way of life is jeopardized, our future is imperiled. Only the valor of our English com patriots have saved us from physical as well as spiritual defeat. Our trait orous Quislings are heroized; the tra ducers of our nation are openly up held as patriots; our Benedict Arnolds are safe behind their mask of democrat ic immunities; our free speech ideals have been prostituted and perverted and the hands of our greatest Presid ent have been infamously tied by des igning Republicans and mollycoddie Democrats. Our case for war against Hitler is as strong as it will ever be; the time has struck when we must de fend our nation with sweat and tears and blood; a declaration of war is long overdue if the honor of this nation is to be maintained. And what do we have? Sabot eurs running wild, Quislings rampant, Hitlerites scoffing and strikes abound ing, labor and capital using the crisis to further selfish ends, America First committees springing up like mush rooms over night. What do we have? Subtle campaigns of Negro baiting and race hating, prejudice taking pre cedency of principle, studied efforts to exclude the Negro from a program* that will fail without him, our great radio system turned over almost en tirely to the pro-Hitlerites with their Lindberghs and Wheelers to confuse and bewilder people too bent on money grabbing to save its soul. The role this nation is playing to day will be the cause of shame when the history of the present is written by the historians of the future. We are a ! . — conquered nation! We are afraid to make war on an enemy that has his dagger at our throats. We are living today not by our own strength but by the grace of God and the valor of Great Britain and Russia. The great American whose record for courage in the past, has succumbed to the siren songs of our Quislings and pro-Nazis and is ripe for Hitler’s prey. We are not saved by our own courage and val or ; we are being saved by circumstanc es. We are just lucky; and that is all. The nation that is saved by mere luck is lost. War is at present necessary and inevitable but we are hindered by subtle influences that even our Presi dent dares not challenge. What we are doing today is, waiting for our country to be recaptured. Only a war can save us and we cannot declare that war because of pro-Hitlerism in this country. This nation is at the mercy of this country’s henchmen of Hitler. What a shame! This country has been conquered! The tolerance with which the designs of Lindbergh are treated shows this; the seeming reverence and admiration for Wheeler shows it. The difficulties that Roosevelt encounters in his efforts to retrieve our nations shows it. This nation is in a stupor of indifference and ignorance induced by our isolationists who are knowingly of unknowingly Hitler’s henchmen. These political perverts would vacillate until Hitler has conquered Europe and then he could concentrate on this country and conquer it physic ally as he has conquered it spiritually. When a nation gets too proud Or too philosophic to fight for its honor and safety it is conquered. Democracy is a fine thing but it must be preserved if need be upon the field of battle for there it was first bought and paid for. That there could be found a Negro America First committee to support Negro hating, Jew baiting Lindbergh is deplorable. Lindbergh’s club foot stuck out the other night when he turned on the Jews. He meant Negroes also and let us not forget it. Negroes must not so easily forget how ugly Lindbergh was when he refused to reward the Negro who found his slain child. Lindbergh is for Hitler and Hitler is against black peoples.
