In these amendments are to be found the guarantees of indivdual lib erty, including FREEDOM OF RELI GION; FREEDOM OF THE PRESS AND FREEDOM OF SPECH. At the time they were adopted they did not in clude all the men and women of the country; the “PEOPLE OF COLOR” and Colored Chattel Slaves, were ex cluded. Years afterward they were to be included at the cost of a million in human lives and a billion in treasure. Now, all of us may and must join in celebrating the 150th anniversary of “THE BILL OF RIGHTS” which means more todajy than it has ever meant before. The Colored People of the coun try, like their fellow countrymen of other races, have taken liberty for granted. It can no longer be taken for granted anywhere in the world today. Therefore, let the Colored People of the NATION organize celebrations in every town and city in the United States where they reside, parade the streets; assemble in halls and churches and hear addresses oii the “BILL OF RIGHTS”, what they have meant and mean to Negroes and mankind. Let us do this not only because it is right we should, but for the greater reason that we have given more in proportion to our numbers to make LIBERTY A LIVING THING here in America than any other racial group, while at the same time receiving the least from it. But the principle must not die, and if it is kept alive, we shall yet know, its benefits and share its bless ings. And by holding this torch aloft we shall serve not only ourselves, but mankind everywhere. The time to begin is now, the place, here. Distinguished men and women of the NATION are backing the celebra tion under the auspices of the COUN CIL AGAINST INTOLERANCE IN AMERICA. HOW SAFE AN AUTO DRIVER ARE YOU? Every driver in Omaha will be given the opportunity to get the an swer to that important question at the courthouse any day except Sunday dur ing the two weeks, October 6-18. Through arrangements made by Ralph H. Campbell Insurance Agency, the elaborate safe driving tests feat ured by Aetna Insurance Company at the New York World Fair, will be op erated in the courthouse rotunda un der the joint auspices of the Omaha Safety Council, Omaha Police Depart ment, Nebraska Safety Patrol and the Sheriffs office. Everyone is invited to take these tests without charge. Each person will be given his own score, and no rec ord will be kept of them. The first test, on the Glarometer, judges the driver’s reaction to head light glare. It reveals how much light he needs to identify objects against glare of an oncoming car. The second test, on the Reacto meter, measures his reaction time in applying the brakes in an emergency. Average reaction time is one half to five-eighths of a second. The Steerometer test shows how accurately the driver steers his car. Seated at a regulation steering wheel, he attempts to steer in line with a zig zagging dot on a screen ahead. The Periometer test measures the driver’s width of vision while driv ing with eyes focused straight ahead. A score below 60 degrees indicates, “tunntel vision”, in which the field of vision is restricted to a narrow angle. NATIVE OMAHA GIRL MAKES GOOD » Elsewhere in this issue is the story of the appointment to a position of honor and emolument and service of one of our native Omaha girls. The position of YWCA secretary at Mineral Wells, Texas under the USO tq which she was recently appointed came to her as a result of merit. She took the advice of her parents and pre pared herself to meet opportunity when it came. When it came she had her College degree and was ready to met “the fickle lady” - Mrs. Elliott is a fine example of the “WILL TO GET AHEAD”. She remembered the oft repeated saying of a benefactor of mankind: I will pre pare, and some dajy my change will come’ We earnestly hope that the ex ample of Frances Gordon Elliott will not be lost upon the youth here. ‘PREPARE AND SOME DAY YOUR CHANCE WILL COME”. THE TERRORISM OF HITLER Hitler has inaugurated a reign of terror in the countries he has conquer ed. In France, Holland, Belgium, Nor way, Yugo-Slavia, Greece, and Czcho Slovakia, “HEADS ARE FALLING”. This may lead to wholesale executions and murder of all the inhabitants, a practice sometimes followed by con querors before the beginning of the Christian Era. And since Hitler does not recognize Christianity as other peoples know it, he may conclude to rid the world of its believers. The only reason he might hesitate would be because such a course would interfere with production of needed supplies of every kind. But in his mad ness he may proceed to the extremity indicated. But while we condemn Germany, history shows that other nations “have blood on their hands”; Great Britain France, Holland, Italy and America. Because of these things, is Ger many an avenger? ALDERMAN DICKERSON OF • CHICAGO VISITS OMAHA Alderman Earl Dickerson was the principal speaker at an anti-Hitler rally at Zion Baptist Church. He re peated what the Guide has been saying for many months, “we must get rid of the HITLERS right here at home”, in order to achieve NATIONAL UNITY and defeat Hitler of Germany. He was a bit offside on his his tory of the Negro in government ser vice. Prior to the Wilson administra tion there had been no segregation in the government departments at Wash ington. The recent statements made by President Roosevelt against depart ment segregation were designed to cor rect an evil his democratic predecessor had instigated and developed. To be sure, Republican presidents Harding, Coolidge and Hoover lacked the cour age President Roosevelt has shown, They said nothing and did nothing a bout it. THE DESTROYED? RUSSIAN ARMIES The German High Command and Dr. Goebbels, their propaganda minis ter, according to the statements they have made, have destroyed, in killed, wounded and captured, about 26 mil lion Russian soldiers, and the air fleet several times. Russia had but 16,500 soldiers when the war began. It is beginning to appear that the dead and captured armies repeatedly come to life and continue the fight a gainst the German army. All of which indicates that somebody is telling “tall lies”. COWS AND MEN Udder ointment is used for cleans ing the udders of cows. Recently, however, at one of the Douglas county establishments, according to the World-Herald, it is now being used on persons. That is different, even if it is not new. It seems that the County bought and paid for udder ointment at Clearview Home, where there are no cows, hence the explanation as to its use. GET THE NEGRO SOLDIERS OUT OF THE SOUTH The Negro soldiers should be re moved from the south. They cannot be made safe there, unless the Admin istration at Washington wishes them to be safe. It appears that it does not and their movement is in order. U. S. SENATE INVESTIGATES MOVIES The United States Senate has been conducting an investigation of the MOVIES for the past several weeks, because it was charged they were show ing pictures calculated to get the Unit ed States into the 2nd World War. A number of senators complain that the movies show up the bad things the Nazis do, but fail to show the bad things the anti-Nazis do. The complaints relate to things being done in Europe. The Senators who champion the Nazi cause and de nounce England and the “American War Mongers”, are silent on the abus es heaped upon American Negroes. And the pro-British Senators are not one bit better in this respect. It is that way. When Thomas Jefferson was President of the United States in the very early part of the 1800s the Armenians were inflicting many wrongs upon the Greeks. A'n old friend of Jefferson’s said to him: I do so pity the poor Greeks”. And Jef ferson, looking out upon his hundreds of Negro slaves observed: We have Greeks at our own door.” Will the United Senators please take notice. FREEDOM’S PEOPLE On the 21st of September, 1941, there began, under government aus pices, an educational radio program designed to acquaint the American People with the Colored People of Am erica. According to announcements sent out from Washington, D. C., pro grams will be presented monthly sett ing forth the work done by Colored Persons in the field of Music, Theatre, Exploration, Invention, Science, In dustry, Education, Sports and Military Service and other activities in Ameri can life. Colored People as well as white people should listen to the broadcasts. Too few of them know the history of the darker races here and elsewhere. And our white fellow countrymen are illy informed. All this will help to save; rather make for democracy, here at home. NATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMUNITY SERVICE The National Catholic Commun ity Service announces the opening of five recreational centers under USO. for Colored mn in the military service of the United States. Five additional clubs are to be opened in the near fu ture. All directors of these facilities are trained colored men and women. During the First World War, The Knights of Columbus rendered a sim ilar service for all soldiers. Their work in France was especially note worthy. We have every reason to be lieve it will be equally so in the pres ent “NATIONAL EMERGENCY”. MR. WILLIAM PICKENS, MASTER SALESMAN Mr. William Pickens, who served for many years as the Field Secretary of the National Association for the Ad vancement of Colored People, is now engaged in selling National Defense Bonds, and along with them. National Defense. With his rare acquis tive and explc ive powers he is, perhaps, the MASTER SALESMAN OF HlS GENERA aiON. Complementing the work of Dr. W. E, B. DuBois, Mr. ii ■***■■*■ ■■I’wm I. ■ I I —— r Pickens did much to sell the NAACP tc America and the world and to make it respected by all informed men and women everywhere. Now heading the U. S. Treasury Savings Staff set up to sell savings stamps and savings bonds to the Ne groes of the country, he is rendering incomparable National Service. He knows what it is “ALL A BOUT”. PAROLE FOR DRAFT LAW VIOLATORS Fifty-six youths who were sent to prison for violation of the Selective Service System have been paroled, leaving only four of the sixty impris oned still in confinement. Perhaps, the Department of Jus tice felt that the youths fell afoul of the law more through ignorance than a willful intent to evade military duty. At any rate, the wise course seems to have been followed. THE WAR MATERIALS PRODUCTION ANSWER If we are really in earnest pro ducing war materials, let the manu facturer make a profit and pay the workers high wages. The present prac tice and suggested practice of limiting profits and wages, will lead to failure of the whole war effort. Workers will spend if they earn. And thus the whole cycle will become complete. If you are charged with that something you call “philandering” with the third angle of the triangle” and you don’t know what to say, keep silent. Will the police “morals” squad leaders please take notice.
