Pro football . . . Jackie Robinson,
former UCLA star, snagged a 40
yard pass from among the great
est football eleven in the world
and jitterbugged the remaining
six yards to score six of tre All
Stars thirteen points. But the Chi
cago Bears trounced the Stars 37
to 13. Jackie made nice gams on
all his running plays when he car
ried the ball. But his gains were
not far enough to bring one of
scouts from the stands with a con
tract for him to sign. Maybe his
gains Were not “white” enough.
But that is the American Away of
life, so. Some of the boys who
played longside of Jackie will be
signed up with one of the pro
elevens with a season check $3,000
up. But Jackie was chosen by the
American public to play on a team
that represents ,the best football
players in the colleges and univer
sities of the U. S. A- and this, t°°>
is an American way of life. . . .
Down in Des Moines this Septem
ber 5 the best football player from<
high school in the state of Iowa
will play in the East-West game.
On the West team will be a start
ing end by name of Lawrence
Freeman. Freeman graduated from
Central high of Sioux City and was
picked as a member of the squad
when 41,000 votes suggested that
he would be quite a help to the

er, who showed Kenny Washington
and Ozzie Simmons how to play
football in Chicago last year when
all three played on Duke Slater’s
team, may play with the Sioux
City Comets. Vondervere learned
about sports at Eldora boys school
and is considered by some as the
greatest athlete in the state . . .

Dr. G. W. Adams of Washing

the Negro United Golfers associa
tion which held its championshps
tournament on the Pankapoag
course n Canton, Mass., last week.
Pat Ball, Cicago pro, won the
championships and the prize mon
ey of $275. This is the fourth time
the 42-year-old golfer has copped
the National title ... In 1927 he
won the title at Stowe with 293,
in 1929 at Westfield, N. J., with
290 and in 1934 with 296 in De
troit. Ip winning the title this
year Ball had to beat Clyde Mar
tin, Joe Louis’ personal pro from
Detroit, which was no picnic, Bud.
Ball finished the 72 holes with a
302, 18 over par, and Martin with
1303. Zeke Hartfield, a pro at the
Lincoln park course in Atlanta,
kept the Atlanta’s golf prestige in
tact when he shot 149 for the first
36 holes to rack up the lowest
score of the entire tournament for
36 holes. But on the final 36 holes
he went off stride with a poor 158
to finish third with a total score of
307. Hartsfeld’s feat brings to
memory the 1938 championships
held at Palos Park in Chicago. Pat
Ball was there along with some
135 other top-notch Negro golfers.
And Pat was leading the crowd in
the opening round of the mens
open. But after the first round the
gallery trudged after lanky How
ard Wheeler of Atlanta . . . watch
ed him tee up on the edge of a
match folder, strided easily along
the fairway and flop on the green
while waiting his turn to put. Dur
ing the afternoon he shot with re
sults that would please many top
notch white golfer. He shot rounds
of 68, 73, 72, 71 . . . and brother,
that course was plenty tough and
hilly. Wheeler’s 284 won the title
and $200 . . . and set a new record
for the Negro championship . . .
just three strokes above the all
time U. S- open record set by the
great Ralph Guldahl the year be
fore. So Hartsfield takes his place
alongside of Wheeler Bobby Jones,
Charley Yates and others who have
made Atlanta Golf No. City.

P)—Ray Robinson, up and coming
lightweight, won an eahy technical
knoekout over Carl Guggino of
Hartford, in 2:47 of round three in
a scheduled eight-round bout at the
Queensboro arena Wednesday
night. Four thousand fans were
there. The scrap had been origin
ally planned for Monday but rain
lompelled a postponement to Tues
day and then to Wednesday.
LUNCEFORD ‘MOST ORIGINAL’

just completed a nationwide ex
country tour Jimmie Lunceford,
after playing a Labor Day date at
the Renaissance Casino here, left
on another jaunt that will keep
him rhythmically “swinging" along
the Atlantic Seaboard during the
month of September. New Jersey,
New Hampshire, Maine, Connecti
cut, New York, Pennsylvania, West
Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky and No.
Carolina have already or are soon,
slated to welcome America’s No. 1
dance orchestra during the current
month.

dance rhythm, Lunceford again
becomes the first band to turn,
down engagements in order to take
a two-weeks’ vacation. That is

Avenue, was fined five hundred
dollars and costs, in court, by
Judge Wheeler on charges of vio
lating the liquor law.
Mr. McGee kept repeating while
the case was being tried that he
wanted his case tried Wednesday,
but Judge Wheeler insisted that
the case proceed.
When Mr. McGee said that the
purchaser tried to sell him the
whiskey instead of him selling it to
the purchaser, the fine wah assess-'
ed.
McGee shouted “I repeal that
fine.”
