THE OMAHA GUIDE Saturday, June 21, 1941 Omaha, Nebraska— DICKERSON MYERS WEDDING ANNOUNCED Mr- Charles Dickerson, 2814 O hio Street, recently announced the marriage of his daughter, Mary Ellen, to Mr. Robert Myers, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Myers, 2416 North 22nd St., on September 14, 1940. Invitatons have been extended to a number of their friends to at tend a reception given in honor of the couple on Monday evening, June 30th, at the Dickerson resi dence, 2814 Ohio Street. VISITING Mrs. Lula Madison and Miss Bet tie Louise Madison of Parson, Kan also Mrs. Katie McGee of K. C Mo., are visiting Mrs. Ethyleen Smith, 2201 Charles St. VISITS IN ST. LOUIS Mrs. Robert Williams, 2515 Charles St., has returned from a visit in St. Louis, with a brother, Mr. Jim Puckett, 4310 Cook Ave., Mr- Puckett has lived in St. Louis for 41 years, and has a lovely home there. While in St. Louis, Mrs. Will iams was highly entertained by the Postal Alliance Auxiliary. She received many lovely gifts. Mrs. Bryant, 4452 Page Avenue, gave her a beautiful Glass Salad Set. Mrs- Williams is the wife of a retired postal worker, Mr. Robert Williams. RETURNS HOME Mrs. Daisy Larue Gaiter, last week returned to this city from Los Angeles, California,'to be at the bedside of her sick mother, Mrs. Allen, of 2710 Hamilton St. VISITS IN CHICAGO Mrs. Ray Gaines of 2233 Locust Street, and Donald Jr., are visit ing in Chicago, Illinois VISITOR FROM CALIFORNIA Miss Mae Bell Hutson, from California, is here visiting her brother, Mr. George Hutson 2652 Dewey Avenue. VISITOR FROM CALIFORNIA Miss Dorothy Alexander from California, is in the city visiting with her mother. MOTORS TO LOUISIANA Mrs. Laura Eddens, of 1701 N. 24th St., and her nephew Mr. Leslie Loud, 2825 North 24th St-, motored to Caster, La., to the bed side of Mr. Loud’s- mother. They will also visit in Shreveport, La., before returning home. FORMER OMAHAN DIES Mr- Walter Jones, age 38, of Cincinnati, Ohio, formerly of Om aha, died at his home in Cincinn ati on June 19, 1941 at 7 a. m. His brother Mr. Jimmy Jones, also formerly of Omaha, accompanied M;rs. Jones to Omaha for the fun eral services. Mr. Jones had been employed as a waiter, but on June 2, received an appointment as a postal em ployee, but passed before serving in this capacity. He is survived by his widow Mrs- Walter Jones, of Cincinnati, his mother, Mrs. Florence Jones of Omaha, three sisters, Mrs. Del la Henderson of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Mrs. R. C. Price and Mrs. W. A- Harris of Omaha, and two brothers, Mr. Jimmy Jones of N. York, and Mr. Clarence Jones of Texas. Funeral services wpre held cn Friday, June 13, 1941, from Lewis Mortuary, with interment at the Prospect Hill Cemetery. Many beautiful floral o/fferings were sent from both friends in Omaha and in Cincinnati. A large floral spray was sent by the members of the Noble Sissle orchestra of which Mr- Jimmy Jones is a mem ber. ENTERTAINS Mrs. Theodore Thomas of 2713 Wirt Street, entertained for Mr. and Mrs- Wiggington of St. Paul, Minnesota, Wednesday evening, with a delicious chicken dinner that had all the trimmings that go with it and then some Besides Mr. and Mrs. Wigging ton, who were the guests of hon or, there were Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Bell- and Mrs. Thomas. Mrs. Wiggington is the former Gladys Counsellor of this city. IN LINCOLN Mrs. Mildred Thomas, wife of Mr. Wendell Thomhs, local Mor tician, spent a few days in Lin coln over the week end. KAPPAS HONOR GRADS At a recent meeting ^of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, a res olution was passed, honoring mem bers of the local bodies, who are among the June graduates of the Nebraska university. She grad uated from that school in January of 1933, and entered Technical High school Where she enrolled for a five year course in Stenography, and College Preparation. She was graduated in 193-7, and entered Omaha University where she ap plied herself to the work at hand. During her senior year at Omaha University she worked as Steno grapher and Research Assistant for Dr. T. L. Sullinger, head of the Department of Sociology. Other graduates from the Uni versity in the class with Miss Britt were Eva Mae Stewart and Annie Franklin. Miss Britt is a member of the Zion Baptist Church, of the North side Branch of the YWCA, where she is president of the Entre Nous Club and was formerly president of the Gross Eicks Girl Reserve Club of the YWCA. MR. GEORGE GORUM DIES Mr. George W. Gorum, 63, of 2436 Parker Street, former rail road employee and resident of 0 maha twenty- six years died Sun day June 8th at Norfolk Nebras ka- He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Addie C. CENTENARIAN DIES IN OMAHA Mrs. Cassie Hibbs died May 28, at a local hospital, she had made her home with her grandson, Mr. Carl Talley, 1117 North 24th St and was a former resident of Mis souri. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Thomas Mortuary with Rev. J. H. Reynolds officiating. Burial Mount Hope Cemetery. TO VACATION IN SOUTH Mrs. Bertha Mallory of 2221 N. 25th St., is leaving for a vacation on June 12, for an extensive visit in the South. RETURNS FROM EAST Herbert Garner who returned from an exended visit in the east is spending the week in Lincoln, Nebraska, visiting. RETURNS FROM SCHOOL Mr. Henry J. Sanders, the son of Mr- and Mrs. Sanders, recently returned from Alourn, Mississippi where he is studying for his Bach elor of Science degree. He plans to spend the summer in Omaha with his parents. CELEBRATE BIRTHDAY Miss Ersie Mae Hayden of 2509 Burdette Street celebrated her birthday on June 9, 1941. CENTRAL HIGH COMMENCE MENT Central High school commence ment exercises were held in the Central High Auditorium on June 6. Among the graduates were 12 Negroes, Brycie Dorris, Leona Edwards, Johnice Horsten, Doro thy Jackson, Clara Me McClinton, Betty Riggs, Doris Southord, Wil liam Bowden, Kenneth Love, Ralph Montgomery, Kenneth My ers, and Hobert Ray. The summ er school graduates are Portia Trulove and Ellsworth Devereaux. CALLED TO ILLINOIS Mrs. Pauline Mitchell of G621 South 27th Street, was called to Jacksonville, Illinois, due to the death of her cousin, Mrs- Kate House. VISITS IN PASADENA Mrs. P. T. Mahammitt of 2J1G North 25th Street, is visiting in Pasadena, California and will be gone for about six weeks. Kerchevai, and family of 2210 Seward Plaza assisant director of Welfare de partment at Boystown, is on a vac ation tour in their car with a full equipped trailer attached. Their first stop will be Douglas town and on to the Black Hills. JUST RETURNED Evangelist Marie Wright has just returned from Des Moines, Iowa where she delivered service morning and evening. She will leave soon again. PASSES Mr. July Miles, veteran of the Civil War, died June*2, 1941. Mr. Miles was bom Dec. 3, 1849 in Mobile, Ala., Came to Omaha in 1892. He was a member of the Old Guard Post of the GAR. and a devoted member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where military services were held. He served in Co. E., U. S. volunteers. He is survived by a wife Mary, and a daughter Mrs. Mary Toles, and many friends. THANKS We wish to thank our neighbors and friends for the beautiful flor al offering. Brown, state miss ionary of the Churches of God in Christ was a visitor in our fair city for several days- He is from Kansas City, Missouri. Mr. James Sullivan who resides at 3029 Pinkney St., has been re ported ill for several weeks. The former Miss Louise Watson of 2435 Hamilton St., became the bride of Mr. Roscoe Secrets of 2639 Paul St., Monday June 16, 1941. T Miss Alyce Smart and Wililam Harper Jr., were married at the St. Benedicts church Sunday morn ing at 8:00 a. m. Girls here is news for you. We were sorry to hear that Miss Margaret Johnson lost sev*n dollars several weeks ago between 24th and Blondo sts., and 24th and Charles St. Mrs. Charles Morris who resides on Ohio St., is having her home redecorated beautifully inside and out. Mr. Sam McGill of 2724 Lake St., has been ill for several weeks. His condition is better at this time. — Mrs. Jimmie Seay of 2892 Maple St., has been ill. Her condition is reported fair. _ • Because of the,.weather, many folks didn’t get to attend the Ital ian Carnival on 17th St. last week. She is planning on leaving this city in September for Clevealnd, Ohio and there she will visit her aunt, Mrs. Hattie Pettigrew and attend college there in Ohio. Misses Essie Washington, Daisy Cole, Lyndell Partridge, Jessie King, Juanita King and seven'll others of our race are employed at the Methodist hospital. Mr- Eugene Harrison and Mr. Wesley Hudson are employed at the Nebraska Clothing Company. Misses Eva Mae Stewart, Ora Lee Britt and Annie Franklin, re ceived their diplomas from grad uating from the university of 0 maha on last Monday evening, June 9th. Mi's. Pauline Ellison’s husband departed from this life Friday morning at 11:30. June 13th. His body was shipped to Texas. A reception was given for Miss Alyce Smart, Saturday night June 14th at the home of Mrs. Snow ton Cleo Suggs is visiting our city He is from Hiawatha, Kansas. The Seventh Day Adventist Church showed pictures of the col leges in Alabama and various oth er places. I’m sure everyone en joyed them. Miss Lavar Powell is telephone operator for the Ritz Cab on 24th and Patrick St. Crowds of people gathered at Hanscom park Sunday, June 15, 1941 to celebrate Flag day. Mr. and Mrs. W. Butler and Mrs. J. Smith and daughter, Dor othy Smith, went to Minn, on a fishing trip recently. They are back now. _ Mrs- Payne who resides on Grant St-, is getting along better. She has been sick for sometime but she said that she is trusting in the Lord. A show was given at the Ritz to benefit the YWCA, girls who are going to camp this year. The admission was 10c. Mrs. Madison is going to be one of the cooks at the camp this year for the YWCA girls Elder Greene of the Church of God in Christ renders special pray er meetings every Sunday morn ings at 6:00 a. m. Everyone is welcome to come and join in this prayer. Mrs. L. Keys of 2516 Burdette St., have returned to the city af ter attending the Baptist Conven ion in Des Moines, Iowa. Malcolm, Woodrow, and. Foch Allen motored to Kansas City, Missouri to the Sunday school Jubilee Sundty. Cleave Temple, CME. Senior Choir will render several numbers on the program. The choir is under the direction of Mrs. Lucy Mae Britt, Miss Blanch Lee Wright is the soloist. RETURNS FROM VISIT Miss Inez Upcher returned Thursday from a visit to Des Moines, Iowa, where she attended a convention. RETURNS FROM VISIT Miss Anna Lee Upcher returned Thursday from a visit to a con vention, which was held in Des Moines, Iowa. IOWA CONVENTION The Convention in Iowa which j included Nebraska, South Dakota, and Minnesota proved to be a great success among the many in teresting things which occuri*ed. Two of he most oustanding things at the convention were the contest and oratory. FUNERAL SERVICES The funeral services of Mr. July Miles was held at 10:00 Monday June 16, at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. The Grand Army of the Republic had a beautiful cerem ony at the funeral. Sergeant Hamilton gave the bugle call. Four other soldiers saluted the grieve with three roairing shots fi’om their rifles. There were many lovely flowers and a host of friends, both white and colored attended the funeral. Mrs. J. Allen at 2705 Hamilton St., is very ill and has been for some time. She seems to be suf fering from heart attacks off and on. And lately has had a bad one, Her condition is bad at the pres ent. Mr- Olan Prestige of 2108 Lake St., is in Lincoln at the Veteran’s hospital and at this writing he is reported doing nicely. Mrs. Olan Prestige and Mrs. James White motor to Lincoln twice a week to visit their husbands. Mr. and Mrs. Avant of 2215 Franklin St-, are remodelling their home and hope to have a open house when finished. Ella Mae Cain and Wallace Moore left for St. Paul after spend ing the school term here. They resided at the resident of Mrs. Earl Roberts, 2527 Decatur St. Rev. Spencer H. Parish, pastor of Clear Water church, Chicago, 111., was a visitor at the First Church of Deliverance 1724 North 24th Street. Mother Catherine Williams, E vangelist from Chicago, 111 was also a visitor at the First Church of Deliverance. She is the moth er of our pastor Rev. Frank John son. Mrs. Earl Wanger of the Port land Apartments is reported in disposed. Ervin Underwood Jr., of 2915 Hamilton will celebrate his ninth birthday June 15th. Arthur Allen of St. Paul, Minn esota has returned home and will be in Omaha again for the golf tournament. Barbara Jtoe Ann Rouhlac of 2705 Hamilton will celebrate her birthday June 22. She will be nine years old. Her mother Mrs. Mae Rouhlac intends to have sev eral of her little friends in to help her celebrate by taking them to the Omaha theatre. Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Phillips of 3807 Camden avenue, had as their week end guest Mr- and Mrs. H. Dorsey and son Beryman and their guest Miss Mildred Newman all of New Orleans, La., They were enroute home from an insurance convention, where Mrs. Dorsey was a representative from her of fice in their city. Mr. Phillips had not seen his brother for over twenty years. Mrs. Beatrice Gray, 2210 North 27th Avenue, returned home on Monday, June 16, 1941 from a trip to Kansas City, Kansas. Albert Tate son of Mr- and Mrs William Golden of 2417 North 29th St. ,returned home from Douglas High school in Missouri last week. Mr. and Mrs. Harrington and son were called away on account of the sickness of his sister. She is improving. The Friendly Sixteen Bridge Club will have a wiener roast, June 28, 1941 at Hummel Park. The tickets are 15 cents- They are being sold by the club mem bers. Miss Doris Newland won’t be back from North Carolina for at least 2 or 3 weeks from now. Mr. and Mrs. Ancel Butler are planning to take a trip to Okla homa. Mrs- Brooks of 2913 Grant St., has been sick for quite a while She is now improving. Mrs. Gipson of Arkansas arriv ed in Omaha June 15, 1941. She will make her residence here. Mr- Myrt Ellison passed on. His body Avas shipped to Fort Worth, Texas. Mrs. Ellison accompanied the body. Mrs- Victoria Scott, 1912 North 25th St., is in St. Joseph hospital to undergo an operation- The operation is to take place on June 17, 1941. Delegates left here Sunday night to attend the Sunday school and BTU. Congress in Houston, Texas. The delegates were as fol lows Mrs. Cora Haynes, Mr. How ard Swain, Miss Helen Bradshaw, Mr. and Mrs. Dacus, Mr. Mease, Mr. Gainer, Mr. Henderson, Rev. Jones and Rev. Hickerson. The New Era Baptist State As sociation held its annual session at the Paradise Baptist Church, Rev. C. Adams, pastor. The heads of the various de artments elected were as follows: Rev. F. P. Jones the Moderator, Miss Leona Edwards, President of State Red Circles, Mrs. Cora Hay nes, States President of the Wom en’s Work and Mr. Dacus, Presi dent of S. S. and BTU. Congress. Dr. J. M. Nabrit, president of A. B. T. Seminary, Nashville, Ten nessee ,and Executive Secretary of the National Baptist Conven tion, Inc., was here and attended the annual session of the New Era Convention. Dr. C- Richardson, president of Western Baptist Seminary, Kans as City wlas here and was the prin cipal speaker at the closing of the New Era Convention at Pilgrim Baptist Church, Sunday afternoon. The Guiding Light Quartet will be at Zion Baptist Church Mon day night June 23rd. This is a ladies’ quartette. You will miss a spiritual treat if you fail to hear these famous singers. Free will offering. Mrs. I. S. McPherson, 1712 N. 28th St., cousin of the late Mr. Myrt Ellison, accompanied Mrs. Ellison to Fort Worth, Texas where the funeral will be held. Following this Mrs. McPherson will travel to Louisiana and other places in the South. Miss Colleen Kincaid, 2861 Cor by St., daughter of Mr .and Mrh F. Kincaid, spent eight days at Camp Brewster. Miss Kincaid is the president of the Gross Kicks Club. Miss Kincaid was ill part of the time she was in camp, but she is feeling better at this time. Mr. A. L. Scott, 1912 North 25th St, returned to the city from Kan sas Ciy, Kansas, Monday, Jane 9, 1941. He reported that he had a very enjoyable time. SALEM BAPTIST CHURCH Rev. W. E Fort, Pastor L. A. Henderson, Reporter Sunday school opened on time by the Supt. 11 o’clock Services was well attended and a very in spiring sermon preached by the pastor. “Be not drunk on wine, but filled with the spirit.” We had reports from several efforts put on and found very good suc cess- In the baby contest spon sored by Sister Pettis of the Mis sion. A five dollar first prize was won by the baby son of Mr. and Mrs. E- Carter. Our delegat es who left for Houston., Texos to attend the BYPU. and S. school Congress, are looking forward to a very successful trip and inspir ing meeting Evening service conducted by Rev. C. CHURCH Service was well attended at Fellowship Baptist Church Sunday School began at 9:45 a. m- and the church services at 11 a. m. Rev erend Chism delivered the sermon both morning and evening. It wa3 well attended. 11 o’clock service was very much enjoyed and the pastor preached from Psalm 51:10 Sub ject “Create in me a clean heart, Oh God; and renew a right spirit with me.” It was a soul stirring sermon and was enjoyed by all Beginning the 23rd we will cele brate our pastor’s birthday by giving a birth-anniversary at the church. We will have different Pastor’s wives during the week from the 23rd to the 27th. We are asking all of our friends to come out and help us celebrate our pastor’s birthday during that week.
