The United States is spending tremendous sums for defense. The Treasury announced that of $11,229,288 fed eral expenditures during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year, defense items totaled $5, 240,420,822. President Roosevelt put the production machinery of the United States on a war basis —Under the mandatory priorities bill he signed, industry must pro duce first the things the govern ment tells it to and without pro test. An estimated $25,000,000 worth of waterfront property in Jersey City went up in smoke last week in what was called “The worst fire in Jerseys City’s history”— The blaze destroyed sflockyards, railroad piers, warehouses, engine houses, an eight-story grain ele vator, warehouse stores, a milk platform, 16 freight cars and two automobiles. Fire Chief Frank Ertle, backed up by J. Edgar Hoover, insisted that sabotage had nothing to do with the fire. Harold L. L. B.—I have been in college two years and I wish to know whether I will get a job this year or not. Have I met my future husband yet? Ans: Yes, you will secuvie work of some kind for the sum mer months. This is going to be very necessary if you expect to complete your training in col'ege and you do want to no doubt. You are allowing romance to interfere with your school work—you are taking the boys entirely too ser iously. You haven’t met your mate as yet. ****** P. E. R- J.—I think I’m in love with a nice girl but today I heard she was going with another fel low at the same time and I would like to know if there is anything to it? Ans: Well why shouldn’t she receive other company—you two aren’t engaged. The girl is us ing good judgement and if you ex pect to win her heart you will have to change your views to some extent as she isn’t going to let a jealous fit influence her to give up her friends. ****** F. H.—Dear Sir: I am a news boys and I would like to know what you could send me to get more customers and to make more money? Ans: I can send you some good advice, -\rfhich if followed, will get you the results you desire. Here it is: You aren’t putting the en thusiasm into the job you now’ have that you could. The seci-et to getting new customers and making money for yourself is to get out and hustle and dig up new’ business. There are plenty of people who would be glad to buy your papers— if you ask them. Salesmanship is what it takes and this is one job you must leax-n to do yourself. ****** V. M. S.—To begin with I ’m in love with a man much older than I. I am married, and have 2 children but my husband spends most of his time in jail. My friend told me to go back to my husband and make him do for ms and the children and I did. But my friend has changed and dr es not do for me like he once did- My husband has changed to and seems more kind and loving. I don’t think I love him so tell me what to do? Ans: The friend is tired of you and doesn’t care to go with you any more- Stop the relationship altogether. Devote your entire time making your husband and children happy for your husband realizes now just what you meant to him and will do everything in his power to make you happy. If you live right and be a good wife to him, he will do right himself and will not have to go back to flail. ****** M.—My boy friend has gore to the army and I want to know if I must -wait until he comes back HELP US! HELP THE POOR CALL— THE VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA JAckson 2290 15th & Chicago —Does he love me as much as he claims ? Ans: Yes he loves you. Al though since you aren’t sure of your affection for him, it would be well for you to make friends and enjoy yourself while he is gone, for it seems to me that he is going to do likewise. ****** O. I. P.—Is my husband asham ed of me the reason he never tak es me any place and especially on Sunday afternoons? I love my husband but I don’t like the way he is doing. Ans: He isn’t ashamed of you —in fact he is proud of you. The reason he doesn’t want to take you out on Sunday afternoons is the fact that he goes off and plays cards. Dress and go out alone a few times and he will be glad to sacrifice the card game and take you out if he finds you intend to go anyway. ****** B. J—The first of July I am planning to make a trip to New Orleans to see a girl that I went with here in college. Do yon think her people would approve of my coming? Ans; Naturally they wouldn't let you know it if they did—make the trip, as I feel you will be ac cepted. The girls parents gave their consent for you to be invit ed down for a few days and I see no reason why you shouldn’t take up the offer. MAKE AMERICA STRONG At this particular time when all the United States is “NATIONAL DEFENSE” conscious, each day it is being brought home more forcibly, to you, to me, to every one, that wre as Americans have a job to do. Our job is this to make America strong. We must not only protect our lands and waters, and guard our skies. We must do more. We must build the health, the physic al fitness, the social well-being of our people, especially our child ren, the rising generations in the country. We must do this the democratic way. We are rich in children. Child ren w!ho should love and cherisn our lands. Children who should be imbued with a deep faith that here alone we have the greatest chance of life, liberty and the pur suit of happiness. With this end in mind the Child ren’s Departments of the Omaha Public Library will sponsor a summer reading club, June 16 — August 25. All Omaha grade school children are invited to join “THE UNITED STATES ATiMT OF READERS AND THINK- j ERS”. In Children’s rooms gay'.y and patrdotic'rlly drccrhted. to carry out the theme of the project, youngsters participating, will he J introduced books "onceriing +be j American Way of Life, the his-! tory, the spirit, the culture which have made Americans the freest people in all the world. Any child who has a library card may join and any child living in Omaha may have a library card—there is no charge. Club members will ! read ten books during the sum- j mer. They will be given gay cel < | vd folders. As each book is read a patriotic sticker bearing the author and title of the book reported on, will be inserted in the folder. It is your public library’s every hope to make Omaha girls and boys better Americans, stronger than ever before, not only health ier in body, steadier in nerves, surer in living, but keener in mind and more discriminating as read ers. I White Congressman HITS WPA CUT Washington, May 31 (ANP) — Rep. Bishop of Illinois addressed the house of representatives and soundly berated the proposal to reduce the WPA appropriations. Said Rep. Bishop: “It is stated that the President was going to ask the congress to reduce the amount of money for relief by $109,000,000 and that he also wanted the congress to enact legislation which would permit employment of aliens on WPA. jobs. “I think that this is a very un fair request and is unsound public policy. ‘‘In my district there are mere American citizens in need of re lief than last year. This is not their fault. No national-defense industry has been established in that part of Illinois to take care of a portion of the unemployed. “To cut down the amount cf help to our fellow countrymen is bad enough but to insist that al iens be taken care of before cit izens of our own country are pro vided for just does not make sense. “Mr. Speaker, I hope to see the day come once again when we will look out for the welfare of our own American citizens and prov ide for them in place of spending so much time and money in behalf of non-Americans. “I hold that our first duty is to see to it that the needs of the cit izens of the United States are tak en care of first, and then we can consider the wants of aliens next. We hear a lot about ‘I Am An A mericanh Let us give those who are unemployed the faith and the courage to be proud of it, Let us not make them fear that someone who is not a citizen will get the bread and butter that rightfully should go to Americans first. “Let no one deceive you. The first line of national defense in this country is the welfare of the unemployed.” Charles F. Davis, Atty at Law ..
