MUSIC AND MUSICIANS (by Booker T. Washington) There seems to ibe a very prev alent habit of “jazzing the Negro Spirituals” among the members of Swingland. Just the other even ing I heai-d Artie Shaw play “No body Knows De’ Trouble I Seen” in a highly swing arrangement with all the jazz chords interpol ated into this piece of music which represent all the hardships and trials that our foreparents had to bear. The Negro spirituals were born in the bosoms of people who found a great relief and a heavenly peace after the singing of these songs. To hear them jazzed up as the mo dern orchestras and musicians are so doing now, it seems that the listening public should get up in arms against such treatment to the songs that meant so much to our own foreparents. When sunny skies grow dim ’Tis then my faith grows strong For I know it is the way, God planned to test my faith in Him. Whatever God has planned For me in days to come He will give me strength to stand And say O’ God, they will be done.
