SPORTS BY CHARLES WASHINGTON Lem Franklin, dynamitic Cleve land Negro puncher, knocked out Carl Vinciquerra in one minute and 32 seconds of the first round of their scheduled 10 round bout at the city auditorium Monday night- Only three weeks ago Fran klin knocked out the Omaha Ital ian in four founds at Chicago. A right of Franklin’s sent Carl down for the count of seven. After Vinciquerra managed to get up he went into a clinch. His eyes were glassy and arms were heavy from the paralyzing shock of that right Franklin threw a left hook to Carl’s belly. Vinciquerra then staggered momentarily and Lem shot a right to his chin that caught the Italian on the chin and sent him to the canvass for the count of ten. At the count of six Vinciquerra managed to scramble to his hands and knees, but his tongue was hanging out and his legs were shaking terribly. Franklin’s father expressed an urge to come back to Omaha- Pro moter Max Clayton’fi reply was, “Who ya gonna get? They're all scared of him.” In the special event bout Roscoe Smith knocked out Billy Gardner of St. Paul in 2:25 of the first round. ^Smiling Smithsimmons” as he is called by his friends, shot a terrific left-hand smash to Gard ner’s stomach for a count of nine and then finished him with anoth er left in the same spot. ****** Last Saturday night at the Old Omaha U gym HSS. eked out a 23 to 21 win over 'Woodson Center. Anderson) General Secretary-Treasurer of The National Baptist Evangel ical Board, Inc.) “God is a Spirit; and they that ivtrship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth-” (John 4:24) “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3) “If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither l id him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds”. God commanded His chosen peo ple to make no league with the idolatrous worshippers °f the land in the country where they dwell, hut to throw down their altars, etc. (Judges 2:1-3) Because there can be no agree ment, no unity, n° harmony, no as sociation; nor no union meetings in reality; between Christ and the devil; nor the Church, and the World; nor Christians and sinners, nor right and wrong, noc Baptists and Faedo-b ptists concerning Church services and worships. Not long ago the writer was in Kansas City, Missouri, and was told by a Baptist preacher that a -ertain Meth' dist preacher of Ont :'ha, Nebraska, had made the boast hat the Me.,u(list preacheis were leading the Negro Christian forces and carrying the Negro Baptist Churches their way in Omaha, Ne braska It is reasonable to be lieve that such a brag, is based '»n the fact that the two largest Ne gro Baptist Churches in Omaha, holding hyp°eriticai union meetings each Sunday night with M-’thodist organizations That is these two Baptist Church es and the Methodist organizations all meet together in one church edifice; and engage in what they call a “Union Meeting". By the way of a rotation one of the pas tors arc designated to preach the sermon each Sunday night in these meetings; while all the other church buildings are locked, und left idle in the dark. A fair esti mation reveals the fact that there are about three thousand church nepib> - n Omaha, NeLiaska that are very, very irregular in attend ing Church services, and about ten h .user - Negi >es in this city who do not b.long to any Church here md sor,v* m«,> attend once in a year and some not at all. These so-called “Union Meetings” do not reach th >se p-ople nor receive the presence of all the active members of these Churches in the compact. And there are hundreds of the members of these churches that are not in harmony, they do not at t nd and criticize the hypocrisy of these meetings. Then why lock God’s Church house on God’s Day? Why not keep all of the Churches open and endeavor to rearh that unchurched multitude. Now coin ing directly to the subject: ' An Impossible Union". Candor Com P' ls us to say that there cannot be o true, real or logical union meet ings, bet we. n Baptist Churches and Methodist organizations. This is evident from the following Scrip tuial, reasonable and honest facts: First because Baptist Churches and Methodist organizations are not ngre j in the doctrine of what is a visible Christian Church It is implied in the origin of Methodism; and they now believe and teach that the Christian church is one big ecclesiastical body con sisting of a confederation of relig ious societies under one head or general government. Their church definition is always treated ns a singular and never in the sense of a plural. Therefore, their local or ganizations are only units of their Supreme body, and are regaided by their own doctrines as Societies t this national ecclesiastical body and not us individuals, independent )r local churches- But we Bapt i's believe and teach according to the Scriptures, that a visible church of Jesus Chiist is a congre gation of baptized believers .ac cepting Christ us their Head, His laws and their rule of government. His life as their model—the spread >1' the gospel into all the world, as • h.ir mission and the New Testa nent as their Creed. We accept and teach that all such ai*‘ Church s of Jesus Christ; indepened* nt and subject to Christ only, as churches and not as one universal church. Hence ,it is impossible lor Baptist churches to hold unen meetings with Methodist societies without the aspect of hypocrisy. Second, because Baptist Church es and Methodist Organizations are not agreed concerning chinch membership Methodists hold that persons may be received as members of their organizations on probation lor at least six months or longer, o study the doctrines and the dis cipline of the organization, and that infantg may be sprinkled and added as a member. This is not in anordance with Mark 16:16, John 3:1-8 and Acts 2 41-47 or in other words to repentence, faith, regen eration and baptism- Baptists believe and teach that none but persons that have been regener ated on born again and baptized according to the Seriptureg should be received as members of the churches. How can there be a union meeting between Baptist Churches and Methodist societies wVn there is no agreement in faith and practice? Who are ihe hypocrites in these meetings? Third, because Baptist Churches and Methodist organizations are not agreed in the doctrine of Chris tian Baptism. Methodists believe, teach and practice several beliefs and mode# :hcy style as Christian Baptism That is they will sprinkle you, pour you, or dip you. But the Bible says: “One Lord, one faith, one baptism". (Ephesians 4:6) The Greek wond for Sprinkle is Rant izc, the Greek word for pour is Keo and the Greek word for Bap tize is Baptizo. Note the differ ence. Jesus Christ said; "Baptize them" not rantize, gor keo them In view of such there can be no tiue Union Meetings between Bap tist Churches and Methodist organ izations as long a» they do not a gree on the doctrine of Christian Baptism. And the Baptist churcii s that engage in the worship are not true to their faith, and bid the Methodist God’s speed In teaching erroneous doctrines. Fourth, because Baptist church e and Methodist organizatons are not agreed concerning th'“ doctrine of the Lord’s Supper Methodists believe, teach and practice “Open Communion”. That Is in their administration of the supper, they invite and permit per sons of any other denomination to partake or eat the supper without restrictions* But Baptists bell've teach and practice what is called, ‘Closed Communion”. It is a church ordinance and must be ad ministered as such, according to the scriptures. Therefore Bapt ists demands the prerequisites of regeneration, baptism, church membership, and a godly life to partake of the Lord’g Supper. Jesus Christ when he instituted the supper sat the example of closed communion because none ate of it but the eleven members of Hig church, and He did not in vite some of His real good friends and not even His own mother. Hence, there can be no real union meetings, when there is no union in the Lord’s Supper. Fifih, because Baptist Churches and Methodist organizations are not agreed, concerning Church Governments. Methodist organizations are gov erned and ruled by their general conference, presided over by their oishops. This is the supreme gov •rning and the only legislative body of their organization and of theitt local societies. But Baptists Churches are not legislative bodies and have no human heads, and they are to execute the laws of Jesus Christ their only head ac cording to the Scriptures. And (ach Baptist Church is a self-gov erning body nnd in the transaction of their business affairs the mnj oiity b*'ar rule in a meeting as sembled. Hence, there can be no union meetings heteewVi a self-gov erning Baptist Church and a sub sidiary Methodist society. And the Baptist churches that endeavor to do so, abrogate their faith and doctrines and play a foolish hppo erite. There art' several otheri Scrip tural reasons and doctrines that render it impossible for Baptists Churches and Methodist organiz ations to engage in Union meet ings in the worship of God, but the reasons given arte sufficient to convince any candid mind that there are no worship of God in spirit and in truth in such meet ings. The Methodists are wise e nough to use this method to weak en and to lead the Baptists and the Baptists are fools enough to ac cept and follow ‘‘Can two walk to gether except they be agreed?”— Amos 3:3). Such union meetings mnnifest that the Baptist leaders are weak in faith, unsound in doc trines, lacking in knowledge, ig nenant of the Scriptures and blind to all the interests, the progress and the doctrines of New Testa ment or Baptist Churches. "And if the blind, lead 'he blind —both shall fall into 'he ditch" — (Matthew 16:14.) Lovingly yours. Rev. James S Anderson, Approved by:— Rev. John F. Thomas, \ B. Veland, \V. E. Fedriek. RINGS "LONELY MAN" IN TOWN (by Charles Washington) Lem Franklin, “the lonely man” of the ring, whs in town Monday with his trainer father, Irving, to fight Carl Vinciquerra. Franklin is rated by the NBA. and Ring Magazine as the ninth ranking challenger to Joe Louis. In Illin ois and Ohio, he is considered as the No. 1 challenger- His rating as the ninth challenger seems in consistent. He has beaten Abe Simon, who is scheduled to meet Jof> Louis soon, and Lee Savold, both v^ho are listed ahead of him. He knocked out Eddie Blunt, who afterwards beat Buddy Baer- Bud dy is also rated ahead of him. He has been trying to book fights with some of the "name” fighters with little success. He has had 16 refusals from the lending heavy weights. He has an unusual pow rr in his punch and they don't want to risk their reputation a gainst him Tony Galento has nromlsed 'hat h<* might meet him in Chicago on March 24th- A Chi cago promoter, Schoneweld, has of fered Joe Louis a $26,000 guaran tee to meet Franklin. They are awaiting Louis’ answer. Louis has been quoted as saying that Franklin is the toughest of all the challengers and that he doesn’t want anything to do with him j Lem has defeated Else Thompson, who Joe Louis fired as one of his sparring partners because he pun ched too hard. Joe’s refusal to fight Franklin is logical. Joe can fight fighters who he knows can’t w hip him and keep making money and why should he take a chance with a man who can punch and take punches like Franklin can Lem started boxing six yeais a go while in a CCC camp- He won his camp’s championship. Return | LEWIS & HARRY II SERVICE STATION 2303 N. 24th Street DIAMOND D-X GAS fp & LUBRICATION H Harry Payne, Lewis Irvin, pB Proprietors ing home from camp, he told his father, then a contractor of his ac hievement. Father Irving put on the gloves with him, but didn’t think much of his boxing and turned him over to Tiger Fann. Fann brought him back to his fa ther and told him of Lem’s unus ual punching. His father entered him into the Cleveland Golden Gloves, which he won with five straight knockouts. Then he en tered into the parade of Champ ions in Chicago, where he knocked out three opponents before being decisioned by Paul Hartnek, an ex Omaha Glover, in the finals. La ter he fought on the Chicago In ter-City and U S- Olympic teams. His record as an amateur was 31 fights of which 26 were KO’s, 22 being scored in the first round, won two by decision and lost 3 de cisions. His pro-records has been 25 fights, winning 17 via the knock out route, 3 decisions, one draw, and losing 4 decisions. Franklin’s one ambition is to b< - come champion some day. Joe I/ouis is his ideal boxer because he thinks Louis has been a credit lo both boxing and his race. Father Franklin said the general sentiment around Chicago is for some one to whip Louis. He said at first they hoped for a white man to beat Iyouis, but now they don’t care if he is white or black, so long as he beats Louis. They left late Monday night for Chicago Lem will remain there while his father goes to Cleveland He hopes to go to Mobile, Ala, to see his grandmother before he starts training for his next bout, which will be March 17, in St. Paul against an unnamed boxer. u A UK’S BUFFET for Popular Brandi of BEER and LIQUORS 2229 Lake Street — Always a place to park— | ^unt«itiiiiitiiiuuqiaiHiiniii!fiHtii!iiuiiiiiiiimniii«aBtiiiii!(uiiuwiHiiiuiiuiiuuuui —. .■ "IT PAYS TO LOOK WELL’’ MAYO’S BARBER SHOP Ladies and Children’s Work A Specialty 2422 LAKE ST.
