    PRESIDENT OF OMAHA U. ADDRESSES
URBAN LGE ANNUAL MEETING
Mr. Howland Haynes, President
cf the Municipal University of 0
maha, addressed about 160 persons
at the 13th Annual Meeting of the
Omaha Urban League Community
Center on Tuesday, February 11.
His analogy of American democ
racy was drawn from “Pilgrim’s
Progress" and other bookg of sim
ilar philofophy. He made the
statement that there was a gr<’at
n ed for racial understanding be
tween the white and colored pro
pie ond that this could only be ob
tained by closer relationship be
tween the two groups by the shar
ing of intellectual interest. A
meeting of this type, he said, was
one way of approaching better
community unity through the shar
ing and using of ideas about the
nation of which we are all citizens
He closed his talk with the
statement that he had had exper
ience with Urban League work <n
Cleveland, Ohio that that he had
com' to look upon it as one of the
outstanding agencies in the field

of disseminating this type of phil
osophy—that is, of building up
wholesome racial relation attitudes
and, at the same time, working to
eliminate the negative conditions
und* r which Negroes live and hav'c
to face in America. He stated
that thift democracy may not be
perfect because of its short-com
ings in relation to the treatment
of minority groups but that it
was much better than the totalit
arian slates that exist elsewhere in
the world.
Preceding Mr. Haynes’ talk, the
Muse Drama Guild presented a
skit entitled “Urban League in the
News—1940’’ which very clearly
portrayed the work done in th« a
gency.
During the business portion of
the meeting, the following persons,
were re-elected to the Board of
Directors for the year 1941: Say
foert C. Hanger, Mrs. C. K. Ross,
and Harry E> Dickinson. New
members were Charles Stewart,
civic leader of South Omaha and
Rev. W. H Phelps, Pastor of the
Ijowe Avenue Presbyterian Church
and algo President of the Omaha
Ministerial Union.
A handicraft exhibit was dis
played in the library. Comments

Calling AH Christians
—World Day of Prayer!
The treacherous flame of war
seems to be spreading more and
more. Neutral nations and peace
loving men and women are being
swept into its path. It is very fit
ting and helpful to be called into
‘he greatest human fellowship.
February 28 is designated as the
World Day of Prayer* and all
Christians everywhere are asked
to join their brethern. In the
words of St. Paul: ‘Let us there
fore come boldly unto the throne of
grace, that we may obtain mercy
and find grace to help in time of
need ” Heb. 4:16.
Critics and alleged infidelg must
admit that there is a strong and
unseen power that surpasses our
comprehension- Our Lord has ad
monished tig that ‘‘men ought al
ways to pray and not to faint”.
The implication is that if we pray
earnestly, constantly and humbly
we will not taint. If it were not
for the elect (those constant pray
ing souls4 our plight would be
much worse.
It is apparent that war monger*
are not considering God. It is the
luty of those who know the woith
of prayer to intercede for our na
