You cei tainly won’t be able to make money to begin with for the cost of starting out in this business will be great. 1 honestly believe that you can work up a nice little business of your own if you go in to flower raising. Read all the literature you can get your hand, on concerning plants and flowers. It will help you greatly. ****** V. J. T-—My friend came all the way here to ask my mother if I could marry him Why doesn’t his grandmother like me and want him to marry me? Why didn’t he send me the engagement ring like he said. I don’t know what to think as I haven’t done anything to his grandmother ? Ans: The boy did come to your city with good intentions—hut When he arrived—he left differ ently and had to begin making ex cuses quick. He didn’t send the ring because he doesn’t want to become engaged to you. He won’t marry you either. It is my sug gestion that you forget him en tirely and make some n«w friends. Finish schocl before you make plans to marry ****** L. A.—1 am awfully lonely and feel as if I haven’t a friend in the world. 1 want to go in nurse training and would appreciate any suggestion. Ans: Your age is going to bt against you getting into regular hospital training—but it seems to me that you could take a course in practical nursing- Talk to your family physician and see if he can not h< lp you get started on a course of this kind—-he will know where to have you go to find out about this matter in your city. ****** K. W.—Tell me did the mistake that I made a couple of years ago ruin my social standing forever Tell me if I will ever marry? Ans: This mistake did not help your reputation any—and you must do everything in your power to prove yourself a lady if you ex pect to get a good husband. Choose your friends from the best folks and do not run around wittf any of the rough crowd. Go to church regularly- In a few years time you will probably find some nice man who will marry you. ****** R. P.—I am going with a tttur^ ried woman and I want to know if there is any danger in me going with her? Ans: Plenty. You are certain ly taking a chance just to be with her when you don’t really love her and she doesn’t love you. If her husband were to get wise to you tv\fo, he would tear jtou up Stop going with her. Find you some nice single girl to run around with—one who is free to give her love and affection. ****** L. T. K.—I love a boy and it seems like he doesn’t care for me. If I tried to talk him up to marry me will he do it or not? Ans: No, there’s no roping this boy into marriage for he does not want to be tied down to any one. He doesn’t love you. It is best that you did n<>t approach ’he subject as he would lose respec or you if you did- The right man will come along in a few years and you won’t have to do the pro posing. ****** O, B. W HITE HOUSE CONFERENCE ON CHILDREN SAY END RACE PREJUDICE AT HOME AND SCHOOL Washington, Feb. 11 (ANP* - The proceedings of the White House Conference on Children in a Democracy, just published includ es the general report adopted by the conference, which has the fol lowing to say concerning the Ne gro: “The children in families of min ority groups often suffer several types of handicaps. Their par ents have less chance for employ ment and economic advancement I the experience and degree of social exclusion: they may receive an unequal share in public and pri vate services, school, recreation, medical care and welfare service. The largest minority group and the greatest sufferers from dis ci imination are Negroes. “One of the disadvantages suff ered by Negro children is that the Infant death rate among Negroes is terribly high compared with the infant death rate among whites. “Science has made it clear that strict race lines cannot be drawn and also that no factual basis ex ists for any assumption that one race is superior to another. The reasons for prejudice and discrim ination must therefore be sought mainly in social and economic ra ther than in biological factors. The problem is a large one quantative ly in the United States and one which must be met if we are to give all children reasonable opp ortunity for health and happiness. “The education program for re ducing irregularities of the minor ity groups will of necessity be of long duration. It will be based on the conviction, held by this con ference, that the denial of oppor tunity any child on the basis of race, color, or creed is undemocrat ic and is dangerous to the welfare of all children. The effort to el ,minute race prejudice and accom panying discrimination must be made in home and school, local and national organizations, public and private agencies. “The effort to obtain equality of opportunity for children without regard to race, color or cued, should be pursued in the places and institutions that have potent ially the greatest influence upon children. The first of these is in the family, parents have a partic ular obligation to protect and strengthen the natural tolerance of their children. Schools are next in strategic position to foster tolerance and promote cooperation Success depends upon the attitude of the teachers in the daily life of the school. Opportunity presents it: elf particularly in the teaching the social sciences. We need better literature on race relations j NOTED W RITER Raphael P Powell, n0ted write! whose recent book “The Human Side of a People and the Right Name” has created a furore am ong race authorities. His discov eries settle the long debated con troversy on the name, “Negro” and great care in the selection of textbooks on the subject.” FRANK L.
