The larieuse Beauty Bureau was established by the ^
Godefroy Manufacturing Company to study methods
of preserving women's natural beauty, and to make
the results of this research available to the public.
Columnists always must be ready
to discourse upon their studies, and
while attending the National Asso
ciation of Cosmetologists conven
tion in Atlantic City several weeks
ago, I had to think fast and talk
even more quickly when one of my
reuders appeared before me in flesh
and blood, and asked this simple
question:
“Miss Downing, my husband ob
jects to my use of cosmetics. Yet,
I feel that their use can help my ap
pearance. .What can 1 do about it?”
I knew that I could speuk frank
ly, and so I replied: “It may be
that your husband objects to the
way you use cosmetics, more than
to cosmetics themselves. Let me
expluln.”
And because the explanation will
reply to many slmilur inquiries, I’ll
let It be the subject for this column:
Women of good taste use cos
metics in moderation and in har
mony with their facial characteris
tics. Many women through im
proper upplicutiou of makeup em
phasize their defects. Iteveal your
personality through the art of muke
up, but do not follow a fushion un
less it suits your individuality —
rather adapt the fashlou to your
type.
Bleaching or lightening ones hair,
for instance, when the skin tone
does not hurmonize, will have the
effect of making one appear gro
tesque. Using lipsticks, rouges
and powders which were blended
for blonde, fair-skinned persons Is
a mistake which we formerly were
forced to make since our particular
needs were given little or no consid
eration by cosmetic manufacturers.
The successful use of cosmetics
depends upon the proper selection
of shades and the application of
them to conform to the individual
type.
The first step, then, is to study
yourself.
If ones features are not those of
the Greek goddesses and therefore
lack classic proportions, this can be
compensated for* by a beautiful
complexion or by luxurious hair.
All shades of complexions can be
and are beautiful if the skin Is free
from blemishes and they are In har
mony with the color of the eyes,
hair and eyebrows. The pinkish
white complexions which some of
us effect cannot be flattering be
cause it emphasizes, by harsh con
trast with our dark hair, the darker
skin beneath the makeup.
The use of mukeup can only be
justified if It enhances ones good
features and softens ones defects.
Proper hair arrangement, use of
suitable cosmetics such as powder,
rouge, lipstick, eye pencil and mas
cara—these elements help.
But don't use these aids to beauty
In the theatrical manner.
Here are simple rules to observe:
(1) Your mukeup application
should be done In a minimum man
ner, and avoid exaggeration.
(2) Makeup must not change the
Individual characteristics nor de
stroy the personality. How often
have you seen women who have
completely chunged their entire
facial expression by merely shaving
their brows and penciling In an un
natural line?
(3) Makeup must be In harmony
with the color of tfoe complexion
and hair. The darker the skin und
hair, the softer the makeup.
(4) Makeup must be in harmony
with the nge of the individual. The
more advanced the age, the more
restrained should be the coloring.
(5) Mukeup under artificial light
ing may be more intensive and ac
centuated.
(6) Mukeup should be used which
is in harmony with clothing worn,
What are your beauty prob

and she will be glad to answer
them. Be sure to enclose a self
addressed, stamped envelope.

BY ROOT. L. MOODY .
Safely Thru Another Year—
Ttie last days of 1940 are pass
ing swiftly and there remains only
a few more chances to do the good
that we, have planned for this
year. There are a few times .vhen
it is right to look backward*, ' nd
the end of the year is such a time.
Lookiiv; back over 1940, we might
count our blessings.
We may have had many succes
ses or failures, we may have had
many hardship!, or disappoint
ments during the year but all of
these could have been either more
numerous or worst. If we have
life, health, relatives and friends,
we have been blessed.
God has guided our country
throughout this year, and we have
escaped the tragedies of war,
earthquakes and famine. We
truly have reason to look hope
fully toward 1941.
Our best resolution might be ex
pressed in the words of St. Paul;
(Resolved that: ) “Foregtting
those things which are behind and
reaching* forth unto those things
whir;, ace before, I press toward
the mark ;or the prize o' The
hfph CP i;ng of God which is in
Christ Jonus.” Phil. 3:13, 14.
CHRISTIANITY—
The Low Wage and Unemployed
Workers will hold a discussion on
the subject of “Christianity” at
their regular meeting which is
held every Tuesday at 8 p. m. at
the Church of Deliverance 1837 N.
24th St
There are so many cases but due
to lack of cooperation of our peo
ple, we can only take up a few at
the present.. Our group should
attend these meetings and get in
volved in the good work which we
are trying to do for the uplifting
of our race. We have a drive on
for members who are interested in
the civic, commercial and indust
rial problems of our group and we
all wish you a happy new year.
