Shaded part of map ■howi whore the November sleet storm wrecked telephone lines. A When the Storm Struck On Sunday afternoon, the 10th of November, a drizzling rain which had been falling in midwestern Nebraska began to freeze and form ice on the telephone wires. About the same time, other sleet storms had developed in parts of Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota and in some places there also was heavy snow. The weight of the ice on the telephone wires, coupled with falling temperatures and a strong wind, caused many telephone lines to break, cutting off about 200 cities and towns from telephone communication. This Company and its subsidiaries, the Tri-State and Dakota Central telephone companies, had more than 50 000 wire breaks and over 2,000 poles down in the territory in dicated on the above map. The telephone property loss of these companies was nearly $200,000. This brings to more than $3,000,000 the amount it has cost this Company and its two subsidiaries the last 10 years to repair property damaged or destroyed by storms. Restoration of telephone service interrupted by the No vember storm was accomplished in the usual manner. Trained telephone men were assembled in the affected areas ss quickly as possible and immediately started to work repairing the lines. In this storm, about 850 men were required. They con tinued work in spite of cold weather and nearly impassable highways in some localities until service was restored, practi cally all of which, was done in two or three days. In emergencies such as this, much valuabta time is savad bacausa wa ara praparad to maat tham. A, second advert'"1-ment, extolling the high qualities of Nebraska Tri umph potatoes, will appear in The PACKER, January 12. Grocers throughout the state of Nebraska will receive especially'' prepared window .it.'earners adv ertising Nebraska potatoes. Nebraska’s 1940 potato crop, ac cording to the most recent federal crop report, totals 10,660,000 bus hels grown on 82,'.."0 acres. This is second onlv to the record crop of 11,637,000 bushels in 1928,, but the 1940 average yield of 130 bus hels is nearly *‘*0 per cent larger than the 83 bushels average in 1922. Steady growth in the popular ity of Nebraska potatoes in the past ferw years has been due in great part to more widespread compliance of Nebraska growers to standard grading practices Washing, now extensively practic ed by Nebraska; potato shippers., which reveals the beauty of the well.colored Nebraska Red Tri umphs, is another important fac tor in increased demand. In the 19.19-40 season, the Chi cago market received 1,121 car loads of Nebraska Red Triumpns, as compared to 300 to 400 carloads in former years. U. S. No. 1 grade also commanded premium prices on the Chicago, Detroit^ Baltimore Pittsburgh and other markets. Although commercial product ion of potatoes was begun in 1906 in the North Platte valley '.princ ipal potato-growing area of the state, it was not until 1918 or 1919 that the Triumph variety be gan to gain prominence. Today the name “Triumph” is synonymous with potato quality in the valley . Improved methods of harvesting handling, grading and packaging have greatly aided the develop ment of Nebraska’s Triumph pot atoes and given them a favored place with consumers everywhere. Much credit for this progress is due to the work of the Nebraska Potato Improvement association and the Certified Seed Potato Growers marketing organization. CONTRIBUTE TO THE NEBR.
