Upon that occas ion Mr. Roosevelt said: "In speaking for the common purposes of all of these forward looking men and women I have, I believe,av oided the delusion that this is a campaign of person,, or personalitiee. o indulge in such a fantastic idea of my own individ ual importance would be to bet-ay the common hope and the common cause that has brought us all to gether this year. Ai great man left a wateword that we can well j repeat: “There is no indispensable man’ DETERMINED TO be THIRD TERM CANDIDATE— The effort to establish, plausi bility has cloaked every step of the “build-up" p-iogram of the New Deal Palace (luaid which! brought Mr. Roosevelt's nomina tion for a Third Term at Chicago in response to a manufactured draft. It is known to nil men and wom en who read newspaper during the past year that the President ifnded to be i candidate for a Third Term. As the Chicago Tribune state*, in describing the various steps be gun ten month* ago, to bring a bout thus Nev^ Deal nomination: “Mu. Roos'-veit's predecessor’s when their intentions were asked had been quick to say that they would under no circumstances ac cept a Third Term. Only Mr. Roosevelt refused to answer that question He not only refused but h'1 cueated the conviction in the minds of all the people that he would take the Third Term, that ho would use all the powers of his office to get it, and that the firm est determination of his life was to break tradition and to stay in the White House, becoming histor ically notable as the President who did what no other Piesident had done.” So much then for the hypocrisy of a so-called spontaneous uprising of the people, demanding that the President be a sacrificial offering for the good of the country: A condition, and not a theory, comf-nts, the citizenship of Am erica. That citizenship ijs called upon to decide, once for all. the most momentous question ever presented to the electorate during the moire than 160 years of our history. TRUE DEMOCRACY ON TRIAL If ever true Democracy were on trial it is now in this hour of cris is. The interests of minority groups in the United States are more definitely in peril than evey before, We, the Negro group, are included in this peril to the freedom and liberties of the Am erican people. When the fundamental Americ an principle of individual choice, initiative and opportunity shall be destroyed, a Government, central ized and powerful and ruthless, ulilil regulate and control Indus try, Agriculture. We wish no extension of it, with all the great powe- s which have been surrendered to it by Congress and which have led to experimenta tions wjhich, by and large, have failed; the fearful waste! of Bil lions of Dollars during seven and one half years of futility; the ov e~ increasing burden of taxation, and a crushing public debt—all of these ard burdens which beat down upon us and cru,sh us—and, it is well to remark: the condit ions here described were brought about long befo-e the huge appro priations for National Defense to which no one is objecting. Economically. also, we are bound by shackles which have re duced the great masses of our race to levels of subsistence far below that of their fellow^ citizens.
