in Washington when the Nominee

tee to select the personnel to con

faces to represent the Negro view
point.’’
SEEKS NEW BLOOD IN
NATIONAL CAMPAIGN
The other additions to the Cam
paign Advisory Committee are of
a kind and type similar to the ap
pointments of Messrs. Nutter and
King. Mr. Willkie having declar
ed that he wishes to bring some
“new blood” into the organization
For many years, Mr Nuttpr has
been an outstanding citizen of
West Virginia. He was a member
of the Glenn Frank Program Com
mittee which prepared the Report
entitled ‘‘A Program For A Dyn
amic An\erica’’, a statement on
Republican principles.
Mr. Nutter (is a practicing at
torney; has served as President of
the local branch, NAA^P.; was a
n\em.ber of the West Virginia
House of Delegates for four years
was Land Clerk of the State Aud
itor’s Office of West Virginia for
six yeans; Grand Chancellor if the
Knights of Pythias of West Vir
ginia; Supreme Master of Exche
quer, Knights of Pythias; and
Grand Exalted Ruler of the Elks
Organization. He is also a mem
ber of the Masonic Fraternity, of I
Kappa Alpha Psi. and of the Greek
Letter Fraternity, Sigma Pi Phi.
During (his term as a member of
the House of Delegates, West Vir
ginia legislature 'he \vjis author
of a number of Rills, including one
which led to the establishment of
the West Virginia Colored Insane
Asytlum. For many years he has
held places of leadership in the af
fairs of the race.
The other Colored member of
Campaign Advisory Committee is
William E. King, also a practicing
attorney. Mr. King has served as
an Aapiltant Corporation Counsel,
and as Assistant States Attorney,
Oodk County. Chicago, Illinois; as
an Assemblyman, State of Illinois;
as State Senator, and ie, at this
time, the Republican candidate for
Congress from the First Congress
ional District of Illinois, and Rep
ublican Committeman of the Sec
ond Ward,)* rgest political unit of
the State of Illinois.
Mr. King is a forceful speaker
and i» one of those who seconded
tfye nomination of Thomas E.
Dewey at the recent Republican
National Convention. He also
was a member of the Glenn Frank
Program Committee.

Picker Announced
New York City, N. Y. (FR.) —A
new, self-powered model of the
mechanical cotton picker will be
put into masis production early
next year, the Rust brothers ann
ounced at an exhibition of their
picker at the World's Fair in New
York. By means of his new mod
el, two men working a good field
can harvest a bale of cotton in a
hour, or “approximately as much
as a cr.ew t*f 100 average pickers.”
Asked what effect the mechan
ical picker would have upon crop
pers and tenant)*, Mr. Mack Rust
replied, “I’m glad you brought
that up. Here’s the way we look
at it. The average hand cotton
picker works for only tWo or
three months of the year, toiling
in the field for very small wages.
They are just in a hell of a fix,
anyway. To our mind, it’s just
like dragging a man out of a mud
hole.”

NAVY SEEKING ADDITIONAL
RESERVE OFFICERS
The United States Navy desires
to enlist 5000 youngmen. having
at least two years college educa
tion, for instruction (leading to a
commission as Enlsign in the U. S.
Naval Reserve. Th.ese men will
receive one months training afloat
corresponding to bhe present Nav
al Reserve Officers Training Coi-ps
summer cruise. Candidates will
be required to request one months
active training duty without pay
but the Government will pay the
railway! fare and subsistence of
successful candidates to and from
their homes. While the students
will receive no pay, they will bo
given their food, lodging, uni
forms, books and equipment, so
that no direct expense will be in
volved for those accepted
After completion of the cruise,
successful candidates will be issu
ed appointments as Reserve Mid
shipmen and designated eligible
to receive a ninety day course of
instruction with pay leading to a
commission as Ensign in the U. S.
Naval Reserve.
Candidates for enlistment must
have a minimum of at least two
years college credits from Uni
versities accredited by the Nation
al Board of Education; be Amer
ican bom l^etween the ages of 19
and 26; be unmarried; pass the
physical examination ft>r Ensign
Volunteer General Service and
submit two letters of recommend
ation from responsible citizens.
The Navy Department intends
making available three battleships
in the Atlantic, the first cruise to
commence about (July 16th on the
U. S. S. Wyoming. These cruises
will continue until about January
15, 1941. Intensive training will
be given in gunnery, navigation,
engineerfing, communication, and
watch standing at sea.
