OBSERVATIONS bv Frc<1 c wmiams
THE PAST WILL NOT DIE
Down in Tennessee, near the
town of Brownsville, the body of
Elbert Willianig was found float
ing in the river, the victim of a
mob that is unalterably opposed to
Negroes enjoying the 'right to
vot,e’'.
Williams and several other Np
groas recently led a delgation in
to Brownsville for the purpose of
registering aryi exeiVrising the
‘‘right to vote", which is guaran
e,ed to every American citizen un
der the Constitution of the United
States.
This incident is one of many that
has happened to Negroes like El
bert Williams throughout the his
tory of the Southland since the
days of reconstruction following
the end of the Civil War.
“The right to vote” movement
has been organized and promo' ed
for the purpose of emancipating
the Race from the vicious practice
of the Beaucratic South in holding
the Negro in a condition of slav
ery far mere vicious than that
from which he lias escaped in
1866.
The interest being aroused in
this country over the condition of
the Negro in the Southland which
was called by President. Roosevelt
“the South No. 1 problem’1 re
mains unsolved. The white Beau
rocracy found in Both of the ma
jor parties in the thirteen south
ern states long ago swore to for
ever as far as possible to keep the
Negro even though declared to be
a free man, always the victim of
the southern white man’s program
of racial superiority based on col
or. A review of your history le
veals a sad story of gullibility and
misplaced confidence on the part
of the leaders of the Negroes dur
ing the Reconstruction Days, to
salvage the ex-slaves by educating
them and fitting them for a place
in the common wealth and good,
honest and reliable citizpns.
Youjr', history shows that Isaih
T. Montgomery, a member of the
Legislature of the State of Miss
issippi of Beauvair County rose in
the legislative hall and spoke most
eloquently, though quietly in sup
port of a bill disfranchising voters
in that state, which in accordance
to the sponsor of a bvll white legis
lators would disfranchise only
poor illiterats whites and give the
power of political control of the
State to free Negroes under carpet
bagging rule.
T. Montgomery, wins honest in
his purposes ar.d trusting his as
sociates. willingly gave 'his sup
port to the bill, but alas, too late
he awak.ened to tihe truth, that he
haf1 been misled by the explanation
given him and hail aided an obet
ed the whites of the state to pass
the infamous disfranchisement act
that robs his people of their fran
chise, and left them without the
protection of the ballot, and made
them political and economic slav
es.
The passing of the disfranchis
ing act in Mississippi set a preeed
ent that wag soon folowed by the
rest of the southern states.
We write this article for the
simple purpose of pointing out
that what began down in Mississ
ippi through the methods cf be
trayal gradually became the print*
ipal ptint and purpose of a pro
gram to prevent Negroes from ar
riving at the place v.lhere they
could stand on a level with all i
other races of the United Stttes
and demand the full protection of
the Constitution. History is rep*
lete with the program isuth as we
have described by the long record
of barbarous burnings and lynch
ings by such organizations as the
KJuKluxKlari. the Community Pa
trol, the Night Riders, the V gil
entes, the Silver Shirts, Nights cf
the Flaming Sword and the so
called Christian Front.
Thus you have the answer to the
question as to why Elbert Williams
lody was found floating in ihe
muddy waters of a river near
Brownsville, Tennessee. The
South i#s still determined to keep
