Dr Givens pointed out this week, that through the conscient ious efforts of the National Medic al association committee on rec_ ognLtkm of Negro physicians by the AM A., great strides have been made in behalf of colored doctors and the way paved for some constructive discussion of cooperation between the races as will feature the 1940 session. It is further pointed out that the United States in the years just ahead will need the combined re sources of all its rpedical talent, white and colored, to keep the na: tion fit and virile enough to de fend its democracy from aggres sion without and from degener acy within. Dr. Givens points out that now, more than ever before, the nation needs absolute cooper, ation among all of its citizens and h,e sincerely hopes that the Hous ton convention will mean the dawning of a new day in the rela tions between white and Negro doctors. When the temperature Is near the hundred mark It is difficult to con centrate on anything more strenu ous Ihnn our next trip to the water fountain, and we ure inclined to slap our lipstick on haphazardly, dust our fuees with rouge and pow der and hope that perspiration won't wipe out our work too soon. As a result, too often we look worse after one of these brief sessions be fore the mirror than we did before. Apply Make-Up Sparingly The wise woman will apply her make-up carefully and sparingly during the summer months. The texture of the lipstick Is frequently affected by the heat and comes off more readily on the mouth. Pow der, If applied too heavily, will cake when the first drops of perspiration appear, giving a Hour and water paste effect. Rouge, unless precau tion is taken, will smear and stand out In great blobs on the cheeks. It is better to use no make-up at nil than to use It carelessly these hot days. Cleanliness, ns I stated in my last column, is the first requisite of beauty. Wash your face fre quently during the summer. Never apply new make-up over the old splotchy powder. Take a few extra minutes with soap and water und Mien stnrt all over ngain. Blend Cosmetics to Skin Tone Remember that whether you are actually burned from going out In the sun or not, your face takes on a darker hue in summer from the heat and glare. Don’t attempt to use the same shades of make-up that you have been using during the wintei. A powder too light for ional phcfbographic nmgazinje, has lent great impetus to the number and scope of entries for the photo salon to be held in conjunction with the American Negro Expos ition being held in Chicago this summer. your skin tone, streaked with heat and perspiration, will give you a freakish look. A softer shade of rouge and lipstick, too, is important to your summer make-up kit. Get a shade that will blend with your pastel dresses and the durker tint of your skin. If you do go out In the sun, you will probably need to change the shade of your make-up gradually as your skin takes on darker tints. It Is sometimes wise, during this in between period, to have several boxes of powder in different shades which you can blend yourself to get the shade you need at the moment. And don’t forget to keep your hair immaculately clean during the very hot weather. Choose a hair dress that is simple and easily re arranged so that you won’t put off your shampoo too long. Tour daily bath is of utmost im portance these days. Plenty of soap and water is more important than any number of beauty treatments and a great deal more satisfying. The secret of summer beuuty lies in looking clean and natural—a sim ple hair-do, carefully blended, light ly applied make-up, and lots and lots of water. Whdt are your beauty prob lems? Walker’s Preparations ■ ‘‘I use Mme. C. J. Walker’s preparations exclusively be cause I get results from them that I am unable to get from any other preparation," stated a well known business woman the other day. The secret of the remarkable success of Mme. C. J. Walker’s preparations is in the fact that they were blended by the late Madam C. J. Walker to reach certain definite conditions of the hair, skin and scalp, and today, after over thirty-five years on the market, they are growing increasingly popular, and not withstanding the fact that the Company has always refused to reduce the price on these goods, they are still in demand every where. ( ' Mme. C. J. Walker’s Glossine, although more than thirty-five years on the market, is still the leader in its field. The reason for this is because it not only serves as a scalp oil, but it gives the hair that silky sheen and natural gloss that is the delight of every woman. Mme. C. J. Walker’s Brown Face Powder is not just another Face Powder, but is the result of years of experimenting to pro duce the perfect blend to impart a velvetlike softness and at the same time cooling and refresh ing. Just the thing for these hot days. The Mme. C. J. Walker’s won derful preparations are sold by Walker Beauticians and Drug Stores everywhere, or you can write The Mme. C. J. Walker Mfg.
