Peace—
Saturday, November 11, is the
twenty-first anniversary of the
signing of tha Armistice. World
outlook is very dark now because
the nations of Europe are again
waring among themselves.
Hundreds of men fought and
died to make the world safe for
democracy and individual liber
ties. But today, twenty-one years
after the declaration of peace,
these prescious liberties are be
ing attacked.
As citizens of the United States
wa have much be \(hank^ul
for. We yet have freedom of re
ligion, press, and assembly. As
a race, we fail to enjoy as much
political and economic freedom
as we desire; but our liberties as
Americans surpass those of many
| common Europeans. Some men
and women of the sawie race and
color suffer more political res
trictions than we.
Let us do our part to hold
fast to our present previleges and
make America a better land of
the free.

bye to the friend" who came to

My trip on to El Paso, Texas,
my next stopover, was most com
fortable in those cool, air-condi
tioned streamline trains. Espec
ially as our train sped through
the Sahara desert, so hot it seems
'marvelous that human beings
could live there. Men were work
ing on the rtfad building Jobs,
'bar3 to the waist—broad hats on.
The temperature was 130 degrees.
The low houses had two roofs

Arizona i« ima.de up with a thou
sand and one scenic delights. One
of the most colorful aspects of
Arizona life today is the activity
among Indian women in produc
ing handcraft, all executed by
hand in the old manner. The In
dan women sit on the ground at
the station selling their hlan •
made wares to passengers, but
cover th.ir heads to avoid having
their faces taken by kodak fans.
I arrived in hi Paso, Texas a
8:30 a.m. August 2nd for a three
hundred mile round tr n to motor
to Carlsbad Caverns New Mexi
co. The u.p was historical and
very interesting se ing wild an
telopes on the way to the Cav
erns, salt flats three-fourths of
a imilo long which contains salt
and 99 pea- cent gas and oil. At
one time ocean wa.er stood t.hr.e ]
feet deep.
There is a government radio
station on Mt. Run, no letter,
signals by numbers. At Wiathalup
Canon, Texas in 1849 the Indians
tough, the whita man while six
thousand feet high, a part of the
old trail of stagecoach days from
Tipton, Mo., to San Fiiancisco
from 1858 to 1861 is plainly seen
to this day.
We drove over an underground
river— jhe Black River—which
runs ten miles 'underground in
Texas. Aftr three hours wind
ing though mountains and over
plains, we arrived at Carlsbad
Cavern, New Mexico which was
discovered by a cowboy, Jim
White, in June 1901, when he saw
from a distance milhons of bats
flying out of this massive great
dark hole. Until this day one
part of tho Caverns has over five
thousand bats that fly out at
dusk every evening during sum
mer to eat insects. Carlsbad
Caverns is the world’s most gor
geous natural wonder in all ages.
It was the most outstanding part
of my tour. It is 750 miles under
Guadalupe Mountains. Already 5
miles of pas-'-'ag.'s and chambers
and others have been explored.
Huge formations of stalactites
and stalagmites have joined toge
ther ami formed huge columns
as much as sixty-five fe:-t tall.
Many of the magnificant forma
tions are beautifully colored in
shade of tan, tints of rose, green,
and purple. The fascinating
bi'eath-taking, awe inspiring for
mations are brilliant and are all
the handiwork of God, said to
be sixty million years old.
The government opened this
underground palace to the public
with convenient trails and stair
way in 1930 as a National Park.
There are unbelievable formations
that resemble ipy pools, totem
poles, draperies of onyx, all
kinds of statues, throne rooms,
Green Lake room where there is
a small green pool, King’s Palace
Queens Chamber, Papoose Room,
the big room is four thousand
feet long over s*x hundred feet
wide and three hundred fifty
feet to the ceiling, Rock of Ages
room, the lights are extinguished
which leaves Ihe party of four
teen hundred people in a thick,
black, darkness and the strains of
the hymn “Rock of Ages” is
sung by a group away off in the
distance.
In the caverns are rest rooms,
lunch rooms, and Jim White, the
discoverer, selling his own story
in a book of the History of
Carlsbad Caverns. The people1
were all taken to the surface m
two elevators 750 feet in one and
one-half minutes each.
