Why Jim had rather catch a jack than eat 3 dozen pancakes. I remember one day he caught a fellow player’s jack. He hit the table so hard the table splintered like a 12 year old house shingle. The table put Jim back 5 'bucks to replace it. He didn’t mind. He pfcid for the table right then and there. He caught a jack. You know this fellow Jim belongs to that good gun club, the Eureka, so Jim and McGee, the barber, decided to slip out to the range and do a little shooting. You know pulling a fast one on the rest of the boys. This Jim has got about 50 or "5 different kinds of shooting irons. Jirp and McGee arrived at tho club, took the'r shooting iron" out of the bag. Jim loaded the sin gle barrell. McGee pulled the trig ger for the blue rock. It sailed in the air, Jim took aim and fired McGee looked up and didn’t sec Jim. He began to wonder. Off he went to find Jim. About two minutes of searching he found Jim stretched out on the ground with his left eye the size of a wild goose egg and as black ss a freight engine. The gun kicked Jim in the eye. The first thing Jm thought is what the ladam is going to say. She will think some body shoved a left hook in my eye. “No, no,” said McGee, “I will tell her 'better.” “Just your word won’t do,” says Jim. “I tell you what we’ll do. I'll go get Noah Thomas. She will be lievo Noah.” So the shooting match was off for the time being. Off they go to find Mr. Thomas. About 11:30 PM they found Noah. After they explained the accident to Noah, he decided to help his old friend by going home with him to ex plain to the madam about the black eye. The madam believed No ah but not McGee and Jim. Richard Stanley TUXEDO BARBER SHOP On Thursday morning, Aug. 3rd about noon, Mr. Junior Love deci ded he needed a hair cut so off to the Tuxedo Barber Shop he went to his favor'te barber, Mr. Joe Bail ey. While Bailey was pursuing his profession an argument arose a bout the 100 yard dash. Mr Love said he was 9 second man in school Mr. Bailey dropped his sheers on the floor when Love said that. Why I can out run you right now.” said Bailey. “What?!’ said Love. “For 1 buck I can beat you in 100 yard dash.” Mr. Love tore his pocket slight ly getting his wallet out to cover Mr. Bailey’s buck. So they went to the starting point. Mr. Love still got the barber cloth around his neck. Bailey, sees the barber cloth but doesn’t mention it. They ar rive at the starting point both safe and sound. They pause for a few second. They are off. They come thundering down 24th street be tween Grant and Burdette about 2 and one-fourth miles per hour. They reach the finish fairly. Both out of breath and dead tired are they. After 10 minutes rest Bail ey asks who won. The judges did not have a camera to take the finish so they called it a dead heat. I will bet 30 cents that the city gamlbler better known as Gardner Macklin can out run both of them 100 yards or 50 yards. The bet is open any time they choose. Bai ley had to take the rest of the day off, stiff as a board. Mr. Love went home and hit the hay. “Never again,” said both. The crowd roared. -oOo HAPPENINGS ON 22ND BUR DETTE ST. Soft Ball Gaines All Quiet on the Western Front July 2nd Hezzie Stars much improved ball team beat Mr. .Grey’s 4C to the tune of 4 to 0. That got to be a regular hab't shutting out the 4C Hezzie is giving notice to the other 3 teams that he is out to win the remainder of th)e schedule so look out boys. Th'ngs went along right well. Brother John Law was there in case of trouble. Except for breaking up a crap game the law ‘ennd thine* rather dull. HSS beating again The Woodson Center, the boys from pig town, beat Mose Ran son’s team 10 to 7. Mose’s pit cher was wilder than the March Rabbit. But the HSS out hit the boys from South' Side. Most of their runs was on errors by the young pitcher. I still believe the HSS is the best team among the 4 teams. Joe Brooks is Mose’s best pitcher. Why he didn’t send Joe in to save the game is a mystery to me and all the fans. He is still 7 games in the lead. No wor ry on Mose’s part. August 4th Hezzie All Stans gave Woodson Center a sound trouncing by the score of 9 to 2. This All Star team of Hezzie’s just ran wild on the base. Woodson Center went to pie ces after the 4th, 7 runs in one inning on a few hits and lot® of errors. Hezzie keeps on having those lucky nights as Jack Black burn says when Joe Louis knocks some palooka cold, another lucky night for Hezzie. Mose Ranson’s HSS lost a heart breaker to the 4C Friday night be fore 2,000 fans. The 4C had Mose shut out until the 7th. Not even a hit. Fountain beat oue one to t> infield and a double to the center fielder coupled with 2 errors net ted the HSS 2 talleys. The final score 4 to 2. Where does Mose get so many beautiful young ladies that sit on the HSS bench or do you guaran tee your self some extra fine roo ters ? Keep up the fire, Mose, you are a cinch to win the pennant in your league. Give Joe Brooks a good rest and he will beat the teams that have been beating him. We know you were handicapped Friday. 4 of your best players were absent from the line up. Of course, you know that your players must eat. In order to eat you must work. I do, I am sure.
