Gerald P. O’Hara sharply attacked
what he this week described as
a revival of the KKK religious
and racial prejudice propaganda.
Speaking from the pulpit of the
Sacred Heart Church, Bishop O’Ha
ra said that he took issue with the
statement of James A. Cole cott,
recently elected Imperial Wizard,
that bhe Klan would promote the
interests of the “native born, white
Protestant, Gentile population of
the United States.”

erinarian of Terre Haute, Ind., was

at a secret “Klonvocation" by rep

WPA workers onto Uhe labor mar
ket in the next GO days. As indi
cated already, 570,000 of them are
permanently off the l-olls, the oth
er 450,000 are on a 60 day fur
lough withe y pay, with no assur
ance of getting back. It is obvious
to anyone with elementary know
ledge of the facts that only a
small percentage of these million
will bo able to secure jebs in pri
vate industry during their period.
No sucih drastic action has been
taken, even in the days of Hoover.
It is difficult to bedieve that res
ponsible men would inflict such
hardship on this great army of
needy families. It means that 40
per cent of the present WPA rolls
will b0 out on the streets in the
next 60 days.”
Mr. Lasser is urging all mem
bers of the alliance to work for
the passage of the Murray-Casey
bill, which would have increased
the appropriation over the Presi
dent’s request and improved and
streamlined the whole program.

Birmingham Vot
ers Win Right to.
Register .
Birmingham, Ala., July 13—Ne
gro voters in this city won a sig
nal victory last week in their long
fight against disfranchisement
when nearly a score of them were
registered here forthcoming pri
maries, while an appeal from a
circuit court ^decision upholding
the local board of registrar’s right
to deny them this privilege was
pending.
The victory represented the cul
mination of a long fight led by
Arthur D. Shores, local NAACP
attorney to compel local authori
ties to register qualified Negro
voters.
When Negro citizens were re
fused permission to register here
las', month, Shores filed a man- j
'anuu; pe.ition in the local courts
to compel the local registration
board to register them a Circuit
Court Judge J. Russel McElroy
denied this peli.ion without hear
ing Juno 19. Shores immediately
noted an apj>eal and threatened
to take the case to the United
States supremo court if necessary.
It was while this appeal was
pending that qualified Negro vot
ers were registered. Those who
were registered included not only
those persons on whose behalf the
suit was brought but also other
qualified persons,

Columbia, S. C. are boycotting
the Double Cola company because
they refused to employ Negro
help and show signs of discrimin

The Double Cola company is a
concern recently established in
Columbia by capitalists from
Louisville with Mayor Hayes of
Kentucky city one of the general
managers. The new plant is mod
ern in every way and is selling a
very popular drink that is fast
competing with Pepsicola and Co
ca Cola concerns ’manufacturing
soft drinks here. Efforts are be
ing' made by the management to
offset the Negro boycott, and they
are rapidily making places for
Negro help.
