Ans: His object was to ' “show off1 and to try to make you jealous. Never did he real 1 ize that he was cutting his 1 own throat by his actions. V Discontinue your friendship right now, as it is best that you found out what type of Iboy he was before you learned to care more. Such actions as this should not be overlooked. E. CJ. His people would meet him before I could and they would get his money and now we are parted and I am with my mother, but he torments me to death. Tell me what to do as he won’t le<t me alone and won’t live decently either ? Ans: You did the right thing to leave him as he put his own folks before you and was also running out at night. DO YOU REMEMBER? by Richard Stanley Well lovers of the turf. The race season has come and gone. Same of the fans are 'happy and some are sad. The main reason some are sad ig because they tried to beat the card. That is very hard to do. If you pick 3 winners out of 8 races you can pat yourself on the back because you have done good. Some fans think they are ao good they try to (to beat seven or eight races a day. There is where you are wrong. That oldl saying is “You can beat a race but not the races”. In the state of Illinois, standing goon there will be a lot tery on (the same order of the Irish Sweepstake ticket will be sold for $250 and the drawing w'ill take place once a month. The lucky winner will receive twenty thousand dollars. Not bad. Worth trying better than putting 2 bucks on a nag and watch him run last. You will have to wait 30 days for the drawing. Look, what a suspense you will be kept in and the thrill you will get out of hoping your ticket is the one that fate held for you. Suppose 6 people put in 50c apiece and won that will be four thousand dollars apiece. Where on earth can 50c bring that imuch money. Not on a horse. I am sure all of you likes to take a little chance once in a while. That lottery will cer tainly hit the spot when the full details are worked out in Illinois. This paper will tell you all about it. It is now up to the Governor uf the state to sign the bit fi r ft to become a law. I predict in a very :hoit time some more states will try out .the plan if it works in Illinois. That is only a new scheme to get tax money foi old age pension and other state needs. The people are going to gamble in some form anyway. The states might as well be .the take off man as some politician to rob the public. Why should the people in the United States send millions of dollars over in Europe every year when people over here are naked and starving. It doesn’t make sence. I am saving up my change now so I can buy me a ticket and if I win I am going to change the route of North 24th St. instead of running North and South, I am going have old Cho colate avenue to run East and West. All of you in favor of .the change, just hope I win 20,000 dollars. Richard Stanley UNITED COAL WINS 15 TO 2 On Sunday July 2 at 16th and Boyd St., the Cash Coal and West Omaha Booster hooked up /to play a game of baseball which turned out to be a football score. The colored lads out played and out hit the Booster. The game was marred with a series of mishaps. Roosevelt Walker was hit on the dome wi/th a ball by the pitcher, but not seriously hurt but painful. The Booster catcher was hit on the finger and the umpire called a halt after he noted that the catcher’s finger was broken. Tap ley gained his eye and hit two circuit clouts. The game was called off because lost of light The score was 15 to 2 in the favor of the United Coal. Two games for [the United Coal thi3 week. They go on top of the league by one half game. S. RISE Richmond, Va. June 28—The full operation of democracy in our country is that which makes it possible to “delight in recognizing the contributions which members of the Negro race have made to American life and the part which they have had in the progress of the nation.” v This was the sentiment expres sed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a letter of greeting read at the thirtieth annual con ferance of the National Associa tion for the Advancement of Col ored People, which opened here at the Mosque auditorium, Tuesday June 27, at 8 p. m. Referring to the Negro people of America as “an integral group in our American democracy,” the President said, “we look to you to uphold its ideals, to help carry its burdens and to partake of its blessings.” The complete text of the Presi dent letter, which was addressed to Walter White, executive secre tary of the Association, follows: “Tho opportunities of a demo cratic people to participate in na tional progress are legion. Their responsibilities for sharing in the achievement of that progress are equally great. We delight in re cognizing the contributions which members of the Negro race have made to American life and the part which they have had in the progress of the nation. “My sincerest wish for all of you is that your opportunities may be increasingly shared and your responsibilities continuous ly accepted in helping the Negro race to hold fa^t to the advance ments already made and in mov ing forward to higher planes of accomplishment. As an integral group in our American democra cy we look to you to uphold its ideals, to help to carry its burdens and to partake of its blessings. 4 In extending cordial greetings to the Thirtieth Annual Confer ence of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, may I express the hope that the Niqgro race will find steadily expanding fields in which ■to servo with industry, loyalty and distinction. * “Very sincerely yours “(Signed) Franklin D.
