IN RELIGION & THOUGHT
by ROBERT L. MOODY
Genius—
“Genius knows no race, color,
or nationality.”—Secretary Ickes.
Those who were fortunate
enough to hear the broadcasted
part of Marian Andorsons recital,
wero thrilled by the introduction
as well as Miss Anderson’s singing.
Secretary of Interrior, Harold
Ickes, gave Miss Anderson a very
timely introduction. In it, he brief
ly told the history of her life and
tho wrld’s greatest contralto. She
has risen from a poor Negro tenant
section of Philadelphia, Penn to
the world’s greatest conralto. She
has sung before kings and queens.
Aifturo Toscanni told Miss Ander
son that a voice like hers is heard
only once in a lifetime or one
hundred years.
Mr. Ickes also pointed out how
significant that it was for Miss
Anderson to stand at tho foot of
the Lincoln Memorial and sing,
because it wa« under Lincoln’s ad
ministration that this possibility
was made that she may sing be
fore such an audience as a free
women.
Surely, Marian Anderson must
bo the present-day representative
of Paul Lawrence Dunbar’s “Ma
lindy.” It was very pleasant to
hear her. There is another Negro
on top not because of race but
because of recognized talent.
