been added to the 'Church thus far.
This young man is crying alound
against sin. He is preaching God’s
word just as it is written, not
sugar coated sermons, but pure
unadulterated gospel. The peculiar
thing about his message are draw
ing tha unsaved as well as those
who belong to church.

The Sunday school opened the
day at St. John with T. H. Good
win in charge. The attendance was
good, but the spirit ran high.
Dr. Adams preached a fine ser
mon using as his subject “Beware
Lest Any Man Spoil Your Phil
osophy." This message was direrted
to the young people. Time would
r.ot permit Dr. Adams to finish his
message as he had it prepared, but
ho will finish it in the near fu
ture.
The Young People's Choir direct
ed by Mrs. Alice Wilson furnished
the music. Mrs. Wilson and her
Young people are to be commend,
ed for the fine work they are
uoing.
It was noticeable to see how
well the young people conducted
themselves during the service. Mi s
Jackson their chaperon, Mrs. Wil
son their director and Mr. McVay
their “iBig Brother’’ were very
proud of them.
Mr. McVay said Sunday that
these young people wrould be ask
ing your aid to help them buy
vo 'ted choir robes in the near fu- |
ture. He said that he did not think j
there would he any one who would
turn these young people down.
Show them that you appreciate
what they are trying to do.
Wo regret to hear the news that
Sister Harper, sister of of our
own Sister Louise Strawther is
very ill. and brother L. M. Good
lett is a very sick man. We pray
for their comfort and any other
sick member whose names were not
turned in.
The Union services of the M t
houist churches are getting off to

spiritual strength be felt. The next
Union service will bo at St. John
the Third Sunday night with Rev.
Storey of Cleaves Temple, with his
choir on duty. The fourth Sunday
night at Bethel with Dr. Adams
and his choir seiving.
We are glad to see Mrs. Laura
Adamo, wife of the pastor back in
our service. Mrs. Adams has been
to Kansas City Mo., with her
daughter during the sickness and
death of her little grandson, ‘Mick’.

All enjoyed the message. The
New Year’s spirit is in Clarinda,:
and everybody seems to want to
do good work.

our pastor put new life in the
church and all dept. We expect to
help make this a better world to

IMPROVED COLLECTIONS PRE
VENT INCREASE IN TAXES
Readers of the Omaha Guide will
agree with W. L. Pierpoint, presi
dent of the Association of Oma
ha Taxpayers, that improved tax
collections in Omaha during 1939
and future years are preferable to
continue increases in taxation.
Property tax collections in Doug
lass County during 1938 reached
91 per cent of the levy, due large
ly to activities of Omaha’s civic tax
campagin, according to the county’s
treasurer's office. This is a three
per cent gain over the average
yearly collection of 88 per cent of
levy.
Proper action on the part of
public officials and proper diligence
on tho part of private citizens will
mean, improved tax payments dur
ing 1939 and the following years,

Omaha's property tax for 1939
totals $9,136,114, an average of $41
per person in the city. This repre
sents a levy of $37.80 per thou
sand, highest in several years, Mr.
Fierpoint said -and probably re
presents the maximum amount that
can be levied under present condi
tions without diminishing returns.
Mr. Pierpoint declared that 1938
was a year in which tax conscious
/ ness was translated into tax in
I telligence. For that reason, he said,
I taxpayers in the future will give
I scrutiny to any proposed increase
