FEARS U. S. IN NEXT WAR
A charge that England and
France are “craftily setting the
stage to drag the United States
into Europe’s next war was” made
today by Dr. Lyman Harris, pro
fessor history and government at
the University of Omaha.
To th Omaha professor, the
Czech double-cross is mere post
ponement of the ultimate show
down while England and France
| try to woo the Unit d States into
| their armed camp.
No friend of Hitler or Mussolini,
I)r. Haifis has no sympathy for
England or France cither.
"Their rtupid refusal to make
satisfactory adjustments before
dictatorship became a fad in Eur
ope has brought on the present
difficulties. Now let’s keep out of
the whole mess and let them stew
in their own juice."
Bui; unless the American public
is on its guard, Dr. Harris is cer
tain that the next few years will
see Yankee doughboys again pull
ing French and British chestnuts
jut of the fire.
“Various sources are exerting
terrific pressure to change the pre
sent American sentiment for peace
I • one for war. Oily words have
ol- ady seduced our ambassadors
to England and France.
“Recent pronouncements by Win
ston Churchill are further indi
cation of the way British minds
are working. The object of all this
I r. ssure is obviously to create an
unwritten understandirg with the
United States.
The University of Omaha his
torian grew indignant as he dis
cussed, Financier Bernard Baruch's
recent plea for heavier U. S. arma
ments. He denounced the financier
as r. “war-monger” for asserting
that Italy and Germany have their
eyes on South America. Baruch’s
claim that the arms program will
speed reeovf ry, Dr. Harris term
ed ‘‘silly propaganda.’’
To. help repel propaganda, the
University of Omaha will sponsor
p conference on “Education a?
Protection against False Propa
ganda in a “Democracy" as part
of the University dedication ct re
in nines November 3 to 5. Among
the speakers at the conference will
l-o United States Senator Edward
R. Burke of Nebraska and Mr.
Carroll Binder, foreign editor of
the Chicago Daily News.
Dr. Harris warned Americans to
“scrutinize the rearmament propo
sal carefully to gee if it’s neces
sary.’’ He doesn’t think it is, be
moans the fact that Secretary
Hull is sold on the idea, but believe
that Senators Borah, Nye, and
Clark will offer stiff resistance.
“There’s no reconciling a huge
war machine with a desire for
p ace" concluded the professor.
; “Eventually the war machine will
get out of hand and carry 113 ir
I to actual conflict,’’

CHILDREN IN
THE HOMES
DONT Hi MOK SPOILED BABY
Your Child, you mothers, show
their parent* trail Jng. Are you
spoiling your child? Remember|
you may love him aad think hej
or sho is cut*', but he is simply
obnixious to your friends. What is
r. spoiled child? “It is the name,”
as Olive Barton says “selected in
describing the little boy or girl
v ho is all he shouldn’t be and no
thing that he should.” The sobri
quet relieves him of responsibility
and puts- it on others. It means
that care has not been taken to
rave the good of something when
‘spoiled.”
When you speak of sormone you
think is wonderful, remember that
one does not deserve tho credit.
Tie parents was wonderful for pro
during and developing such a child.
Our children reflect their train
I ing. If they are fint. they reflect
our fineness.
Tho spoiled child who has been
humored, who has never learned to
take disappointment, who cannot
hear obedience is some day going
to be as miserable as it is possi
ble to lie.
It is good and wholeosme for out"
small friend of time, four, or five
to have his miniature experiences
of discipline.
It is time to give him an object
lesson, whon a child will not let
his mother leave without a scene.
As long as he is well cared for, she
need make no promises, no tear
ful partings, and smaking out the
back way. Just a cheerful goodbye
and walk away.After awhile he
will cease to protest.
It is a mistaken kindness t»’
overload him with new toys con
stantly. The quickest way to soul”
any child or person is to over in.
dulge him.
Make homo life gay and efiee»
ful, but insist on Inqt conforming:
to house routine and his personal
schedule. Don’t give in repeatedly
to his whines and squalh. If this
method has produced results for
him before.
Make him give in to other child
ren much of the? time. Try to be
gin little lessons of salesmanship.
H<> will have to barn what “right
is. Ho need not be an easy mark;
ho has a right of his own, but he
should see the othtr side too.
