LISTEN TO THIS by Hobart T. Mitchell A promimcnt physician of Mobile in 1884, stated that the brain of the Negro js ora?-tenth smaller than a white man’s and that the Negro could not live in the north because the cold climate would freeze his brain and make him insane. An ex-Senator of the United States, a colored man, Blanche K. Bruco of Mississippi, was honored by having created for him the office of register of the treasury. White members of St. George’s Methodist Episcopal in Philadel phia (1787) wanted to segregate (ho Negro membership to a part of tho church, Absalom Jones and others chosirg not to be insulted crganized the Free African So ciety. In this time this Society be came affiliated with the Protest ant Episcopal Church. From this ! developed St. Thomas’s Episcopal Church opened for service July 17, 1794; and Absalom Jones became fho first Negro rector in the U. S. Th0 Minneapolis Tribune (even ing) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, of Monday, January 21, 1907, states that Edward H. Morris, Negro lawyer of Chicago, 111. has a prac tice worth $20,000 a year. In 1854, Dr. De Grasse, a Negro was admitted as a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society. The first Negro to be gratned a patent was Henry Blair, of Mary land, who received official protect ion for a corn harvester, 1834. Booker T. Washington reached Tuskegee in June 1881, July 4th. was the date set for the opening of tfui school in the little shanty which had been secured for its accomodation, 0 nthe above morn ing 30 students reported. Oliva A. Davidson was one of the teachers later becoming Mrs. Booker T. Washington. 1934-36 Average yearly net cash incomes for the families of white sharecroppers ranged from $203 for Georgia to $643 for North Carolina. Some what lower on the scale, the families of Negro share croppers had net incomes that var ied from a low of $175 in Georgia to a high of $523 in North Cai'o lina, Tho late James Weldon Johnson was the first colored man to pass tho state bar examination of the state of Florida. United States Senator Fletcher made tho motion for him to practice law in the above state. The average Negro non-relief farm operator (family) in Missi ssippi who spends $289 for all foods eats $70 worth of pork a year and only $8 worth of other meats. I A Negro fired the first shot at Manila Bay, from the Olympia, flag ship of Admiral Dewey, com manding the American forecs on the Asiatic station, during the | Spanish-American War. SAVE ON TAX INTEREST .Readers of thc« Omaha Guide are being urged by Wilbur Jones, executive chairman of the civic de linquent tax collection campaign, not to wait until, “the last minute rush” to take advantage of the state law cancelling interest on back taxes. The deadline is Decem ber 31. “Now is the time to square your tax account,” Mr. Jones told the Omaha Guide. He reminded read er* of this paper that delinquent taxpapers daily are saving from 10 to 60 pe r cent by squaring their accounts. Mr. Jones announced that a total of $714,092 in delinquent real estato and personal taxes has been collected towards the campaign’s goal of $1,500,000. Even greater success must be obtained by the end of the year, he pointed out. "With less than three months until the daedline, uvery person in Omaha should be sure hi* or her tax account is paid up to date,” Mr. Jones said.
