CALVIN‘S DIGEST Hitl r's Madness I'WA Funds Louis’s Managers The Doctors Men in high places lose their balance just as men in the com. mon walks of life lose their rea. son. It would appear that Adolf Hitler, head of the German State, has lost his balance. Or it may be that Hitler, long suppressing his anger at the old Allies for having inflicted a humiliating defeat on Germany in ‘18 is now willing to risk all to avenge that defeat. We think Hitler is riding for a fall .however, just as the Kaiser, who thought he too was invinci ble, rode for a fall. But it seems that when militarists become ob sessed with an idea, nothing can set them right but shot and shell. That means blood must be shed. Sad, indeed, but true. So if Hitler thinks he is ready with the aid of his dubious friend, Mussolini, to buck the rest of Eu ! rope, there is nothing the Allies j can do but meet his steel with steel. In the end we believe that Democracy, perhaps, weak from tho loss of blood, wild be the un qualified victor, just as she won in the last war. Mr. W. J. Taylor, Jr., newly ap pointed Adviser on Negro Affairs in the Department of the Interior reports to Secretary Ivkes, that j ‘ State supported Negro Colleges in the South have constructed or aroj in the process of constructing, over six and one half million dollars worth of buildings made possible by grants from the Public Works Administration.” Even since the 1938 PWA Act went into effect in June, we learn ‘grants have been hade to twelve State supported Negro colleges for tho purpose of erecting buildings at a total cost of approximately two and a half million dollars. Tho Public Works Administration has given 45 per cent of the cost of these projects, or $1,149,601.” Tho purposes for which this money is being expended are for dormitories, heating plants, stadi ums, trades buildings, library and administration buildings, science biuldings home economics build ings, etc. We are fortunate indeed in having an administration at Washington which makes it possi bio for Negro education to make i such important capital improve, ments in such stringent times. Not long since, rumors began to spread that Joe Louis was coming under the management and con trol of white men. One of the two ponits of pride about Louis, inso far as the Negro public is concern ed in that Negro brain picked him up from an automobile factory and piloted him to the World Cham pionship, and a million dollar bank account. W eall know that so soon as a Negro gets a few dollars, whites swarm around him and all but smother him with attention. It looked like that would happen to Louis, but now an enterprising Chicago Negro newsman has spik ed the rumor that Louis's colored managers are being supplanted by whites. Roxborough and Black have produced their contracts with Louis and it is stated for a fact that the only white connection Louis has it that colored agree he will fight under the promotion of Miko Jacobs of New York. For those who want the details, it is revealed that of Louis's purses, 50 per cent of the gross goe9 to Louis, 20 percent to each Black and Roxborough, and 10 per cent to Jack Blackburn, Louis's train ed We are pleased to note that Dr. Roscoe Giles of Chicago, form er president of the National Medi cal Association, has promptly de_ nied that the association has join ed the American Medical Associa tion to the health program of the New Deal. For many year9 the A merican Medical Association, com posed of white doctors, has refus cd to recognize Negro physicians or their organization, until now (hat the white doctors are in op position to President Roosevelt’s public health ideas, they seem will ing to accept aid from any and all sources. While Wg appreciate the necessity of the Negro physicians seeking just and deserved recogni tion from the leading medical or ganization of the country, we hope they will not be a party to any program that will place them on record against an administra. tion at Washington that has meant so much to the improvement of th^ health of their race, and health facilities for their race.
