WPA Students Receive Awards
Certificates of achievement and
special awards were presented to near
ly l,00(hNegro students enrolled in
WPA adult education classes in five
central Texas counties, as some 2,000
spectators gathered with the pupils to
attend the second annual interscholas
tic meet at the O. J. Thomas High
school, Cameron, Texas, on June 17.

The exhibition of home making and
the industrial arts and the crafts
revealed much ability on the part of
some of the 400 central Texas students
taking part in this interscholastic

Senate by Senator Bilbo of Miss

action, it has boon revealed here ^
that Negros are behind the move- j
ment and that the Bilbo bill was ,
ijust a “freler," was instigated by |
a prominent Detroit lawyer, head
of the “Negro Nationalist Society." '

revealed that a prominent man

visit to this country, has had a
hand in th*» “back to Africa”
movement.
Tho Negro Nationalist society
has been taking shape quietly in
Detroit for the past several years,
during which time various U. S.
Senators and Congressmen have
been approached on the subject,
among them Senator Vandenburg
of Michigan. An authoritative >
statement her0 has H. that the bill,
known as the Greater Liberian
act, a 27_pagd typwritten docu
ment, which has found favor with
Senator Bilbo, v/ho b studying it,
will be introduced in the nttxt ses
sion of congress.

the nationalization of the Jews in
Palestine.
It calls for survepors and en
gineers, the building of highways,
railroads telephone and telegraph
system. The draining of lands,
building of homes, an army and
navy, and the guarantee of pro
tection by U. S. military forces
for a period of tCn years are like
wise included. This bill .which is
said to have been drawn up by
Ramon A. Martinez, a detroit at
torney, and which covers almost
every conceivable idea for the
complete rehabilitation of lands
and the nationalization of a race.

Washington July 20 (ANP)—
Two colored women have solo or
amateur flying licerBes and one
has a private pilot’s license, it
was revealed here last week. They
aro the only Negro women licens
ed as aviators in the nation.
Miss Dorothy Darby of Pon
piac. Mich., and Miss Lola Jones
of Chicago are those with solo or
amateur licensee. They require 10
hours of flying and do not permit
the holders to take up passengers.
Before the Joe Louis fight with
Max Schmeling, Miss Darby flew
with special greetings to the
Brown Bomber from Detroit.

At least 35 air hours are necessary
to receive this rating, and the
applicant must pass an exacting
th*ce hour technical test, as well
ns demonstrate the ability to per
form such aerial feats as tailspins
loops, ect., Miss Brown had close
to 100 air hours and received a
grade of 96, the highest mark in
the class of 15 taking this test
The other 14 applicants were
white men.

—Five days after he was badly
beaten and knocked out in a
heavyweight fight with Obie Wal
ker, of Atlanta, Oscar Jenkins
who fought under the name ‘‘King
Kong” died Monday night at the
htatiem hospital in Fort Benning.
Jenkins, widely known through
the South, was kayoed in the 10th
round during an all Negro card.
Shortly after the fight ended
