PULLMAN PORTERS DEFENTL _WAGES, HOUR AGREEMENT (Continued from Page 1) Filipinos. No unionc an limit the employer’s right to employ any type of worker. Moreover the Fili pinos, like the Negro workers are under the Brotherhoods jurisdiction and it is unwise and short-sighted for Negroes who are denied certain jobs themselves on account race, to dicriminate against Filipinos on I account of race or nationality. “Some colored maids have been | displaced by white hostesses be cause of am order from the rail roads. Neither the Pullman com pany nor thu Brotherhood had the power to retain colored maids. The ra.ilrads claim the public needs nurses more than maids. Of course the Brotherhood opposed it and is still fighting to reinstate the c.ol orred maids. “The claim that miles above 11, 000 under the Company Union were paid for 60 cents a mile and that porters are now working 14, 000 miles without receiving eztra pay, because of the 240-hour work month, is absurd. Since hours and not miles constitute the basis of pay, 14,000 miles are not signifi cant. 240 hours a month represent eight hours a day, and after 240 hours have been made, overtime on a pro-rata ba.sis is paid up to 260 hours, after which, overtime is paid as time and a half. If for instance, a porter puts in thirty hours of work in excess of 240, he will be paid the rate 40 cents for 20 hours of $8, and then, ten hours at the rate of time and a half, or 60 cents an hour which would be ?d, “Now under the old system, 11, 000 miles constituted the basis month, and would represent over 330 hours. But for this 11,000 miles r. porter only received the basis monthly pay of $88.50, the maxi mum rate for 15 years of service or more. “Today, unde.r the agreement negotiated by the Brotherhood, a porter who works 330 hours, or 90 hours above the 240 hour basis month, would receive $50 ini over time pay, or $8 for 20 hours up to 260, at the rate of 40 cents an hour, and $42 for seventy hours of work above 260 hours, at the rate of time a.nd a half or 60 cents an hour. And the maximum porters monthly wage today, as a result of the agreement, is $11.50 and add to this $50 for overtime, would give the porter $150 for the month ! ly P"-y- Thus, it is apparent that | the 240 hour basis month has, by 1 far, greater earning value than the old 11,000 month.’’ -o I JURY SAYS FARLEY SANE WHEN HE SLEW DEPUTIES (Continued from Page 1) with the. same alienists testifying in his insanity who had acted in the famous case of Pan! The fact that four ballots were necessary be fore the jury agreed upon the in sanity verdict weights heavily in his favor.
