graduated from the West Side
school at the age of 13. She will
graduate from the South high
school at the age of 17.
Miss Walls is a very active
church worker. She is the assistant
superintendent of the Bethel Bap
tist Sunday school, and is also a
member of the choir- She is the
state president of the Red Circle
Girls.
Miss Walls is also active in o
cial work, being the preident of
the Immula at the Woodson Cen
ter and associate Matron of the
Youth’s ,F>a,temity. M5$s Walts
has won two recognitions in suc
cession in the cirriculum in the
study of Psychology at the YMCA
and is now taking secretarial sci
ence course at the American col
lege.
She is planning to attend some
university this fall.
A debate was held for special
entertainment, May 10th at the
home of Miss Helen) Smith. The
subject “Resolve that love is more
important in marriage than money.

Recreation Party
The first of a series of special
entertainments will be offered at
Florence recreation center, Friday

tion party service department are
very much in demand. The assist
ance of this department was sou
ght for a pa nic held at Riverview

vevd at noon, which was followed

The Poro Cosmetologists club
held their May monthly meeting
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. C
Price. After the business hour, the
meeting was turned over to the
program committee. A very in
teresting program was tendered.
The members gave a remaniseense

read some beautiful poems from

Mrs. Martha S. Carter
Dies After Long Illness
Mrs Martha Smith Carter, one
of Omaha’s outstanding pioneer
citizens passed away Monday, De
coration Day May 30th 6:45 P. M.
At her beautiful home, 2211 Ohio
St., after a lingering illness of
in nine months. Mrs. Carter was
born in Whelling W. Va. She came
west 56 years ago, living in Lin
coln, Nebr. sixteen years. Her
coming to Omaha 40 year ago and
has been prominent and active in
civic, social and church circles.
Mrs. Carter was Matron at the
Burlington Railroad depot, 34
years and was retired on pension
Aug. 31 1937. The Burlington rail
road presented Mrs. Carter a gold
shield in April in appreciation of
her years of creditable service.
Mrs. Carter was the founder and
first president of the Colored Old
Folks Home 933-N. 26th Street.
This wonderful vision efproviding
for the aged needy was given its
beginning 25 years ago by this
wide awake progressive woman
Mrs. Carter was active in the
management of this worthy institu
tion until 1936. Mrs. Carter was a
member of the Mt church in
Wheeling W. Vb Coming west she
united with the AME church of St.
John and has been- a member for
forty years. Mrs. Carter formerly
sang in St. John choir.
Mrs. Carter wus the widow of
Mr. aJmes H. Smith, veteran pri
vate ear employee who passed on
in July, 1931. She was happily
married to Mr. Johnson Carter
I'ct. 19th 1936 who came from
Cleveland, Ohio. Surviving are her
present husband and one son, Mr.
Henry C. Smith both of Omaha
and one sister Mrs. Mary E- Pal
mer of Pasadena, Cal if., and a
cousin, Mrs. Laura Davis of Chi
cago and r, host of friends who
join the bereaved in deepest sym
nathy. During Mrs. Carter pro
longed illness she was always
cheerful w'd hopeful. She was 70
tears olTi. Funeral sendees will be
held Friday June 3 at 1 o’clock, at
St John’s AME church. Rev. R.
A. Adams, pastor, officiating. Jo
seph D. Lewis, Mortician in charge.

CLUB
The Priscilla Needlecraft Club
met at the home of Mrs. Rafferty
2901 Krskin, Thurs. May 26 at 2:30
with Mrs. Pearl Hieronymous as
hostess. The afternoon was spint
in sewing and reading hints on
needlework. Two guests were pre
sent, having been invited by Mrs.
Hyronymous. A lovely two-course
luncheon was served by the hos
tess, which was engoyed by all.
The next meeting will be held at
the home of Mrs. Reynolds 2810
Franklin St. June 9th. One new
member was added to the c'ub, in
the person of Mrs. Winfred White.
