Maryland Governor
Would Equalize
Teachers’ Salaries
(Continued from Page. 1)
Const itution.
The* case in Montgomery county
wus argued in the* spring of 1937
and terminal d by an ago eine.nt
by t' e county board of education
to adopt a uniform, riondiserim’n
nfnry snlaty scale. This case will
result in the Montgomery county
Negro fi aeh rs receiving a salary
increase amounting to $30,000 an
nually. Before, the case was filed a
Negro rVmentary school principal
in Montgomery received $012 a
,\rnr. whereas a white t acher with
the same qualifications and exper
ience was n ceiving $1,175 a year.
The Calvert county waq
t'ded in November 19.37 and settled
C comber 27, by the county board
of education making an agreement
to equalize salaries, beginning one
third in August 1938 and full
equalization by August 1939. Tb’
Hi lay is due to the necessity of
providing additional funds out of
the next tax levies. When full
equalization is p ached. Negro
teachers in Calvert county will have
their salaries increased over $16,.
000.

Approves Arrangements
After discussing the 1 gul action
taken and the compromise p aclvd
n Montgomery an'd Calvert coun
ties. the Governor said:
“I think it hut fair to say that
in arriving at such an agreement,
the representatives of the colored
teachers made the sta<ment that
they wei-e quite willing to await
permanent, fiscal adjustments, to
be made by the n:xt legislature,
and thus avoid any curtailment of
the salaries now* paid to white
tee-chers.
“,It se ms to me that th^se steps
are in the r'ght direction and T
heartily approve the proposed ar
rangements. It s an admirable
thing t/hat the county authorities
