By F. M. DAVIS Obach Tftbbe of Iowa Okayed Because Oapt. Homer Harris of Iowa, for 1935 and 1936 the Big Tea's most brilliant defensive end, was shifted to tackle this season and in the laat few games was not showed even to start, this observer and a good many other Duskymer., icans were wondering whether it was due to race prejudice on the part of Coach Ira Tubbs, who went to Iowa only this year from Miami university, down Flordia way. We are glad to announce, how. ever that we are wrong. Kenneth Belle of Iowa City, probably the llawkeyes' No. 1 sepia rooter, in. forms us that Coach Tubbs is liked by the powers that be, due to his favorable attitude toward colored players. He coached dusky athletes at Superior, Wis., before going to Dixie and while down there never assimflated the section’s prejudices Harris, fir^t Negro ever to cap tain a Big Ten team, did not play his usual sensational game this yaar bacaue he was handicapped by early season injuries. That and ne. thing else accounts for his failure t» start Iowa's concluding games. Meanwhile Fred Smith, sophomore, was not so highly regarded as the fall began, ended brilliantly and observers say that if he is lifted to tackle he will become one of the mation’s phenomenal players. Ton are advised, however, to watch next season’s sport pages for the gridiron deeds of an Iowa half, hack namd Hillery, who hails from Maywood, III. A freshman this year, he is reported as fast and al. woat as elusive as the great Ore Simmons and is expected to see pMMty of varsity service in ‘38. * * * * Mfi and Knd» MorthwovStom next year may have as many as three colored boys playing football at the same time. Ken Simms of Indianapolis and •Ifffl Smith of Aurora, III., are the class of the freahman team at end and will undoubtedly be used much of the time. And of course Bernard Jefferson returns for his senior wjaaoa as right half. What did I his columnist tell you about Ken Washington, great sophomore half bade star of the University of California at Los Angeles? Coaoh Glen Holmes of Oak Park 'made this announcement Wednes day soon after his school accepted the invitation from the southern ers. He said it was “with regret” that he had to tell Pope he was barred and asked to he left at home because of his race. However, he would seek permission to carry along his star to Miami in another capacity. ‘ I am sorry about the develop ment at Miami," said Pricipal M. R. McDaniel. ‘Pope is a fine stu dent and a good player.” Neither McDaniel nor Coach Holmes revoaled why. if they were sorry about th? matter, they did not cancel the scheduled game in Florida. The youth himself was discon solate at the derision of Coach George Yarobough at Miami. Other players on the squad insisted that Pope accompany them South, de claring him to be an mportant fac. The grand prize had grown until it had reached a thousand dollars — a fortune for many in the huge audience. Tensely the time for drawing was awaited, the patrons clutching their tickets in their hands. Among them was a woman and a little girl. Just be fore the hour set, the mother took her child down to the ladies’ lounge. She wasn’t gone long but when she returned, she found that the draw ing was over. Inquiries as to the name of the one favored by fortune brought the information that she had been the one called. But as she had not appeared during the three minutes alloted to the winner to come forward, she had forfeited all claims to the award. • • • Prepared: Two shabbily dressed men were walking slowly along Eighth avenue near Forty-fourth street, their eyes downcast. Sudden ly, they stopped. Through the sub way grating, one had spotted a coin. From the pocket of his torn coat, he produced a string on the end of which was affixed a weight covered with a sticky substance. A few sec onds of earnest fishing followed. Then a quarter was drawn up and salvaged. The two resumed their stroll. But soon they disappeared through a door over which was a red neon sign bearing the three words, “Bar and Grill.” • * • Frustration: Ever since the Spanish revolt began, Enric Madriguera, young Spanish maestro, has spent his every spare moment listening to short wave broadcasts from Madrid. The Intensity of his interest in news from the war-torn land is due to the fact that his mother and four sisters are stranded ih Barcelona ar.d he has been unable to obtain tidings from them. Instead of re ceiving information through the eth er that would throw some light on what may have happened to those nearest and dearest to him, he re ports that all he has heard had been American Jazz. And one of the favored selections, ironically enough, has been “Love Thy Neigh bor.’’ * BACKACHE Flush Kidneys of Waste Matter Poisons and Acid and Stop Getting Up Nights. 35 Cents PROVES IT When your kidneys are clogged and your bladder Is irritated and passage scant and often smarts and buiais ylu need Gold Medal Haarlem Oil Capsules a fine harmless stimulant a|nd difuretftc that always works and coats but 35 cents at any modern drug "tore. The "Buckeye" State Ohio, the Buckeye state, derived Its sobriquet, not front the buckeye trees that abound there, as Is gen erally believed, but from the cam paign of 1840 when (Jen. William II. It was this that forever set Ohlouns apart us "Buckeyes.” “Fireweed” Because the spiked willow herb thrives where forest fires have devastated the landscape, it has well earned the name of "fireweed.” In .June it begins to blossom, and Its (lowers open In slow succeslon all during the summer, leaving he hind them long seed vessels.
