It will run in opposition to the Apollo theatre As stated last week, Pigment Markham will headline the bill deserting the Apollo The Apol lo is attempting to give John Ma son, blackface comedian n big build up.so that he may take over Markham’s spot.Jay Faggen, manager of the Uproar House, a downtown hot spot that features colored talent, has secured an in junction against Bobby Evans, dancing, singing master of cere monies at that hot spot. Evans wants to leave for another spqt but Faggen claims t hat he has him under contract until the end of the year at least. The matter will be ironed out in court. “Virginia,” the musical play staged at the Center theatre and financed with Rockefeller money, closed last week- In the production were Buck and Bubbles, Avis An drews and Will Vodrey’s choir. It will no doubt be the most expen sivo flop of the season.The Federal theatre Project is present ing ‘Jericho,” a colored presenta tion at the Walnut next week_ The show being sponsored by sev eral prominent colored business men who are workig on a percen tage basis. Sunday school be gan at 10 a. m. with a nice at tendance. The sermon for the morning services was, ‘‘How Shall Wo Escape.” Hebrews 2nd chapter 3rd verse. The pastor is asking the church members and all friends to con tinue prayer for Prof. L. L. Bos well who is very ill in the Wheat ley hospital, Kansas City, Mo. The Harvest Day service in the afternoon sponsored by Sister J. A. Crumbley and the choir, was very much appreciated and enjoyed by all. The text was, ‘The Harvest is Past, tihe Summer is ended, and wo are not Saved.” Subj. “Harvest is Past.” Jer. 8th chapter and 20th verse. The night service was held at the usual time. The choir presented the audience with a musical, mostly for the benefit of a special guest from the broadcasting stations KOIL and WAAW. MT. OLIVE BAPTIST CHURCH Rev. J. P. It was submitted by Rudy Ram pacek, 4915 Burt street, Omaha artist. Honorable mention for outstanding posters also was given to Floyd Wilson and Milton Reynolds. The rosier will be used extensively in this year’a drive, in which the goal has been set as $577,739.19. Chest Drive Opens An army of men and women who will accept gifts from those who have to help those who have, not, are now actively engaged in mnk ing plans for the most extensive and intensive Communi'y Ches* campaign in the history of Omaha. Tho goal set for the campaign which will open with a city wide sweep November 16th, is $577,739. 10. The amount is 9 per cent over the money actually collected last year but the increase is necessary to meet the growing demand for care of dependent children und families, according to a careful survey compiled by the Chest based on rnnorts from the 29 affiliated agencies. President J. L. Haugh of the Chest and Roy L. Page, general chairman, have joined hands in the drive with mm and women in all sections and walks of life in the city to bring the campaign this year to a successful conclusion. For days now the personal and industrial solicitation has been un derway. The solicitation of person, al contributions began Monday morning following a meeting Sun day at the Paxton hotel. Victor B. Smith, chairman of this division, presided and gave final instructions to tho more than 100 men volun teers. J. M. Harding, head of the iudtis trial division, with 450 captains in charge of other hundreds of work ers, have been quietly canvassing for large contributions from in dustry. Sage. In preparation for ths drve 15 meet ing are being conducted this week where the women are expertly schooled in the work being done by tho Community Chest in Omaha so they may tell the real story of so cial service when they call on the people. So that all of the people of Oma ha may be accurately informed of tho far reaching activities of the Community Chest and the work it does through the affiliated agencies a speakers’ bureau is carrying on an educational program. This bur eau is headed by Walter L. Pier point and Farrar Newberry, news- 1 papers, radio stations, theaters and many other institutions and organ- j izations are cooperating. Simmons for ANP)—'Declaring I that statesments made concerning him as a result of a recent fiasco j probe into the mayority expendi tures by the board of elections by Rev. H. Davis, chairman of the Re publican Executive committee, are Walker, president of Wilberforce university filed suit against the chairman here recently for $100, 000 alleging slander. At the height of the hearing, Mr. Davis, questioned about the funds spent for Mayor Harold H- Burton shouted out, “Call in Burr Gongwer (Democratic leader)! Call in D. Ormond Walker! He gave out some Democratic money! He’s president of Wilberforce university in case you don’t know.’ Dr. Walker declared Thursday he would demand that Rees Davis an swer in damages for the “malicious slander he uttered against him” because such statements are false. “When called before the board of elections he charged that the De morrats spent money for precinct workers on primary and that I, D. O- Walker, pres’dent of Wilber force university, had pa d out nv>n ey in their behalf. That statement is utterly false. I made a categori cal denial and am today instructing my attorney L. McGhee, to enter suit against Davis for damages at $100,000. “He caused me considerable em [ barrassment and injury to my re putation and good standing in this community and throughout the sate and nation. He shall have to answer and furnish proof of this malicious charge,” the school head said. Just what will really happen to the controversy is hard to forecast for the probe of primary day ex penditures was dropped by the Board after Republicans and Demo crats mutally agreed to call the whole affair a draw.
