Negro History

J. A. Rogers, well known author

City, has begun publication of a
bulletin, known as “Gems of Negro
History” which will appear weekly
ft is 10 x 14 and illustrated.
Among its features will be a
continuous story of the. Negro from
the, dawn of time to th > present in
all the various lands as ancient
India, Babylonia, Egypt, Greece,
Rome, Africa and the countries of
the New World. The history of the
Afro.Amrican from his first arrival
in 1513 to the present in the vari
ous states will also be told continu
ously.
The influence of the Negro on
the white race will be shown by
citing each week a noted white
person and his or her contact with
some Negro, great or small. One
living Negro who has made or is
making history will be given, and
also one amazing fact of Negro
history.
The first issue conta:ns rhe pic
and the story of Isabeau, a black
slave girl, who rose to be the Jose
phine Baker cf France n the,
1770’s and was favori'e of a King
of France. Far‘s and a sketch
shows the arrival of a Negro of
ficer with Ponce de Leon, the first
white man to touch what is now
‘he United States. There :s also a
sketch of Dr. Emmett Scott, noted
educator of Howard university, and

part the Negro played in the handl
ing of fine gold and diamonds from
time immemorial, a method still in
use. All is beautifully illustrated by
C. C. Bailey, one of the most gifted
of our younger Negro artists.

who died at Gamp Rlandall prison
camp, Edward H. Cowan of Cra
fiordsville, Ind., G. A. R. Surgeon
General, blamed the Daughters of
the Confederacy for continu ng a
North and South division, declared
‘‘The men in the South have been
our friends since the Civil War
ended, but the women keep alive
our differences."
General Cowan praised the
speech of C. H. William Ruhe of
Pittsburgh, Pa., G. A. R. national
commander, who said, “When the
contest (Civil War) was over the
strife subsided, and surrender made
the oath of allegiance suporting
the Constitution and the flag of
the United States was given, for
that reason, it is my wish that over
the groves of these Confederate
soldiers be floated the. flag of the
United States.mot in a spirit of
animosity but of reciprocity.”
