ALL FOR SELF
No man is born into the world
whose work
Is not born with him; there is al
ways work,
And tools to work with, for those
who will
And blessed are the horny hands
of toil.
We were not put on earth to just
dream and drift.
We have work to do and also
loads to lift
Though deep in inire, wring out
your hands and weep
No shame-faced outcast ever
sank so deep.
If you desire the power that some
one else possesses
Do not envy his strength and dis
sipate your energy,
By weakly wishing h s force were
yours.
Think for yourself, depend on
yourself and act for yourself.
—Alma Wall.
Entertainment
Whirl
By Jimmie Evans
A new WPA production opened
this week, a mystery play by the
Negro writer Hughes Allison, call
ed ‘The Trial of Dr. Beck.” The
play was well received with the
main objection being its lack of
good comedy lines.The name
character in the play has one of
the easiest acting snaps we have
heard < f during the entire play he
mouth approximately, two lines
of dialogue.
Tod Duncan, Ruby Elzy, Anne
i rown and the Eva Jessye choir
covered themselves with glory at
the George Gershwin memorial con
cert held at the Lewisohn Stadium
last Monday. The critics were pro
fuse in their praise of the work
done by the stars of his last Broad
way production, ‘‘Porgy and Bess.”
Benny Carter, is still the rage
on the continent. European critics
label him as the ‘king of swing.’
Carter is doing so well on the
other side that it is highly improb
able that he will return to %these
shores for many moons.
William Lyons, who writes a
column for the New York Post, a
white daily paper, is enthused over
the work of Tip, Tap and Toe in
the 20th Century production, ‘‘You
Can’t Havo Everything.” Lyons
maintains that their contribution
is the only original bit of work in
the film.
The Federal theatre’s three ring
circus plays a Harlfem engagement
at the lot at 155th street and the
Speedway, starting Monday. Since
the WPA has somewhat curtailed
their pink slips, the actors on the
Federal Projects are in a better
mood.They have made some de
finite contributions to the national
theatre and the feeling is that the
government should continue to sub
sidize tern. Many producers all over
the country complain however that
the theatre projects are for the
most part filled with incompetents.
That the money of the govern
ment would be bettetr spent if
Uncle Sam would finance the pro
ductions of seasoned and well
known producers.

Earn Extra Money
School days have come, to an
end, which means boys and girls
everywhere have the opportunity
to make merry during the three
months vacation. Here’s hoping
that a majority of the Guidites es
pecially the boys will fnd jobs and
earn money so as to help their
parents defray expenses at home.
While we’re on the subject of
working, perhaps it wouldn’t be a
bad idea if those of you desiring to
earn some money during your
spare time, would sell copies of

The Kettle Drum
One of the most interesting in
struments of the percussion section
of an orchestra is the kettle drum.
These drums, the only ones which
ave definite pitch, resemble copper
or brass kettle of spherical shape
over which are stretched calfskins.
The skins at first were stretched
or released by six or eight tunint
screws which made possible a
range of a full octive. Today, the
tuning of the modery tympani is
accomplished by the use of a me
chanical device. Through this de
vice the change can be made with
the turning of but one screw. The
chromatic tones can also be ob
tained on adequately constructed
instruments by pedals. The drum
sticks used arc of wood: others are
covered with sponge, flanel, cork,
felt or leather.
To meet the requirements of a
composition, the tympanist often
has to change from one set of
sticks to another ns well as to
constantly retune his instrument.
This retuning often occurs in the
midst of a movement in order to
follow the modulations of modern
compositions.
The original home of the kettle
drum is the Orient. It is among the
oldest known instruments of the
Greeks. As early as the thirteenth
century, the tympanic had made
their way to southern and western
Europe. They were generally used
as an accompaniment to the trum
pet. Large kettle drums were
known in the fifteenth century in
Hungary, from where they found
their way to Germany and France.
Toward the end of the 11th century
they were used by the Prussian ca
valry. Until 1700 they held caste
among the tribes of Africa very
much as they do today.
In orchestras today, the tym
pani are many times used as solo
instruments. A most unique ex
aple is in the “Gurlesque in D Min
or" for piano and orchestra and
‘Till Eulcn-spiegel," by Richard
Strauss, and in the last movement
of the symphony phantastique of
Berlioz. But the most dramatic and
symbolic use of the instrument is in
1 the operas of Wagner.
