16 Omahans Enter The Central States Meet at St. Paul The biggest golfing event among mid wester* players is scheeduled for St. Paul, Minn. August 15th over the championship Keller cour se. Seven awards will be given to the winners of the three flights and medalist. According to all advance notices this promises to be tihe classiest tournament ever undertaken in the Central States area. Omaha Comhuskers planning to ompete in this tuornament are: Penny Murray, Malcolm Scott, Jess Hutten, Boyd Galloway, Tom Chandler, Lonnie Thomas, Billy Davis, Dr. Craig Morris, Gaitha Pogg Sabert Hanger, Joe Owen, Harry Lewis, J'.ihn Horton, Har vey Avant and others. Omahans ever growing fan section will be represented by twenty or more fri ends and relatives of the players wl i will take advantage of the va cation angle of the trip. The Com huskers players are drilling daily over Omaha and the neighboring courses in preparation for the big event in tbe hope that they can make up f r 'he short coming in the two previous meets held at St. Louis and Des Moines. Galloway who finished third last year and Murray who won the meet several years ago are said to be shooting the best golf of their careers and should make their presence known next week when sectional players tee off for the 36 holes amateur tournament over the course which the St. Paul Open was recently held and won by Sam Snead. While these boys’ scores will perhaps be a dozen or strockes (higher for the 36 holes than the sharp shooting professionals, such efficient strok ing on tlheir part spCak well for the Comhuskers considering that they only play ive months out of the year. ' Lonnie Tlhomas, Jess Hutten, Mai Scott and Dr. Morris can be qualified as first flight players and any one of them is subject to get sufficiently hot to take some of the prize money. Billy Davis and Sa bort Hanger both previous win ners in other flights are certain to make their presence felt. On the whole Omaha with 16 players, should have a well balanced team capable of winning any or all of the flights. Hurley this week refused a request by Georgia pri son authorities for the extradition of James Cunningham, 37-year-old fugitive from a Georgia chain gang. The Massachusetts Governor said he had found “much evidence of brutality in connection with the punishment imposed” in Georgia Cunningham was charged with escaping from a Georgia prison camp in 1924 while serving sen tences aggregating thirty-four to seventy yours for burglary and re ceiving stolen goods. Y., Aug. 6 (CNA)— White clubwomen have unveiled a monument marking the grave here of Harriet Tubman, revolutionary leader and heroine of the "under ground railroad” of pre-Civil War days. “Servant God, Well Done,” reads the ganite monument erected by the Empire State Federation of Women Clubs to the Maryland-born ex-slave who aided hundreds of runaway slaves in the flights to ward freedom. She died here March 10, 1911. Bom in slavery, she was one of eleven children, upon whom, local historians record, rewards of $40, 000 “dead are alive” were once of fered. For years she carried on her activities from this city, mak ing frerfuent in borsionp Into the South to guide parties of escaping slaves to fredom. The city became known as the center of the "under ground railroad.” On her incursions into the South, Harriet Tubman always carried a loaded musket determined to de fend herself to the death rather than be returned to slavery from which she had made a daring es cape. During the Civil War she acted as a scout for the Union armies, and was several times commended for her bravery and her valuable aid to the Federal forces. -rv— Louis Begins to Train For Tommy Farr Bout Pompton Lakes, N. J<, Aug 6 (CNA)—Joe Louis, world heavy weight champion, began training here this week for his champion ship battle with Tommy Farr, Eng lish heavyweight champion, on Au gust 16th at Yankee Stadium, New York City. Cotton Club Show In Ivondon, Eng. I^ondon, Aug. 6 (INP)— Clarence Robinson’s Cotton L Club show opened L at the Palladium | theatre last Tues H day for a four four week stay. He show was well received with gtt critics comment yg ing on the dash which the chorus and actors performed. Rating special mention were the Berry Bros., the dance team of Norton and Margo, and the tapping of Bill Bailey. Teddy Hill's orches tra provides the music for the show and alternate in the pit and on the stage. Also featured are Rollin' Smith, tft:e Tramp Band and Whyte’s Hop pin Maniacs. Clarence Robinson, incidentally, has been laid up at the American hospital with double pneumonia.
