    Monoply on Moving
Protested by NAACP
New York, July 23—New ten
ants for the TTarlem River W
es, the eovernment-built. low
cost housing project just nn»"
ed here are discovering ♦
when they begin to move in they
must use one certain mn"'
firm and no other.
In the long and complicated
agreement which tenants must
sign is a provision that the New
York Housing Authority will ;i1
tend to the moving of tenants.
No money is paid the movers by
tenants, all the transaction be
ing done by the Authority. One
firm handles all the business.
There is a rout He thru which
all tenan*. must go. The furni
ture to he moved is inventoried
and then moved to a fumigat
ing plant by the trafisfer com
pany. It remains there a full
half day. It is then put in the
new apartment, but the family
has to allow it to mmam there
a full day before moving in
and arranging it. This means
the family must find a place to
stay for a night and a day while
they are being moved feom heir
old home to the new.
Harlem moving men are up in
arms over tl e monopoly and in
response to ''to complaints the
NAACP h. nt a letter of pro
test to Langdon W. Post, chair
man of the city housing author
ity, which has the Harlem T?i
ver Houses on lease from the
government. It is estimated
that the total volume of busi
ness for moving in the 574
families will be around $15,000
and Harlem express companies
don’t know why they can’t
get some of this business. Many
prospective tenants also have
asked to use their own moving
men.
ELMWOOD TO

Harlem, some weeks ago offered to
do something to help cheer and
inspire the youth of our city, be
ing prompted to offer his services
after having witnessed the great
display of talent during the Guid—
fte club May Day Festival. Uncle
Gil highly apprgiatas the spirit
shown by Mr. Williams and only
wishes that other men would seek
too do their part towards pushing
fur boys and girls on to higher
things of life.
All ready another fine young
Bather has offered to supply the
Guidite Picnic with candy. Next
week Uncle Gil hopes to be able
to reveal to you just who this man
is who haa seal to do something
that will make hundreds of boys
and girls happy. So don’t miss

Many Colored Women
Employed on WPA
Washington, TV. C. — A
larger number of colored wo
men were employed by any ot
her single agency, according
to Mrs. Ellen S. Woodward,
Assistant WPA Administrator
in Charge of Women.
Nearly 200,000 of them, many
the breadwinners for their fam
ilies, were employed in sew
ing, making garments for des
titute families; in schools, pre
paring and serving noon-day
meals to undernourished school
children; conducting adult and
vocational education classes,
iu home, providing temporary
free assistance in housework
and care of children to needy
mo.hers; in community centers,
playground, and parks super
vising leisure-time activities;
and on a variety of white-col
lar projects ranging from cler
ical work to fine arts.
This work not ony provided
them with a livelihood, but con
served the skill of the experienc
ed worker's, and trained t he
inexperienced ones, so that tInn
are now prepared to take their
place in private industry as op
portunities arise.
According to Mrs. Wood
ward, the women were employ
d insofar as possible in accord
ance with their usual opera
tion.
Illinois Governor
Signs Amendment
to Civil Rights Act
Springfield, 111., July 22 (A
NT”)—Governor llorner on July
8, affixed his signatue to the
House Bill 79!), introduced by
Rep. Richard A. Harewood of
the Third Senatorial District
which amends Sections 1 and 5
of the Civil Rights Act and ex
tends provisions requiring full
and equal enjoyment of accom
modations, advantages, facil
ities and privileges to include
all citizen-customers in depart
ment stores, clothing stores, hat
and shot stores.
In the past many complaints
had come to the attention of
iiep. Harewood and also to the
attention of the NA.A.C.R that
ci'izems had been discriminated
against in department stores,
clothing stores, hat and shoe
stores; whereupon shortly after
the opening of the General As
sembly Rep. Harewood intro
duced House Bill 799 and secur
ed its passage by the House. It
was admirably handled by Sen.
Wm. E. King in the senate, and
now that the governor has af
fixed his signature it has been
spread upon the statute books
of the State of Illinois, thus
marking another milestone in
the full enjoyment of the right
of all citizens in the State of
Ilinois.
