RECEIVES THIRD DEGREE
JOHN W SIMS
John W. Sims of 2622 No.
25th street, son of Mrs. Lillie
Simms Williams received his
third degree from Creighton
university this past June. He
was the only Negro numbreed
among a class of 291 students.
In June 1931, he received his
first degree of Ph. C. (Pharma
ceutical Chemist). In June 1936,
he was awarded ,the degree B.
S. Phar. (Bachelor Science in
Pharmacy). Continuing his

lor Science in Chemistry) was

mother at the age of ten. Prac
tically all of his education has
been obtained in Omaha schools,
lie was graduated from Ho
ward Kennedy and Omaha

The Closed Door
Standing on the threshhold of life youth is confronted with
its two doors, Success, TIIE CLOSED DOOR, to Which few ever
possess the k)ey and Failure, THE OPEN DOOR, which has no
key.
Tins m|fty seem strange ,tjo the youth who, upon completing
a part of his educational coutrse, fldels within himself that1 he
is now fully armed to conquer lifle and all its perplexities.
True, though the door to success is closed, it bears the in
scription “Enter, all who may.” This in itself is deceiving to
many; for upon turning the golden handle, we fifrtd it, much to
our disappointment, locked—and on the otjher sidle we hear hap
py voices of the faithful few who did posset the key. Then, Iks
if from, another world, we are confronted witjh thle vistion of
an old man who'ill his wisdom tries to offer YOUTH the secret
to .tHe CLOSED DOOR. And i*< his flcehle voice he utters these
words:
Fa!|th—Hope—Charity, tliese three, are the only
key to success, THE CLOSED DOOR. Youth, thou must
have faith, first in thyself and then in ,lfiy fellownwm.
Next thou must be possessed of charity. Shed thy cloak
of selfishness and “Do untjo otthers as you would have
them do unto you." And last but not least Hope—Ix>ok
forward always, never backwards; for with the corning
of the dawn, a new day is born bringilug with it nidw
thoughts, new aims and new visions.
But YOUTH, oftimes, is inclined to doubt the varacity of
old age—many laugh and reply, “Whlat snyest, thou, fool? Does
thou not see that; I am Youth" Thus, with these wantonly ut
tered words, he tosses away the secret of the key ,t)o the CLOSED
DOOR and turns bin footsteps .tjoward that door which is never
closed, THE OPEN DOOR, Failure. And the thoughtful few who
can see thle greait wisdom in .t^he old mail's words bow their
heads and kneel in holy mein before his vision, thus receiving
tihe secret to the closed door.
_ Thus, with .the same mind as the old man, The Omaha Guide
dedicates this issue to the GRADUTES OF 1937, YOUTH.
To the CLOSED DOOR those three
Will make .t^iy path of life sublime,
Fait h—Hope—Charity
With these, the key is t’hine.
