CLOTHES CAN M\KE YOU LOOK TALL Olt SHOUT
Now that spring is here and sum
mer is jusi around Hie corner, wo
men everywhere are studying <lie
fashion notes to make sure that
their new sutnmei clothes will con
form to the very latest, up to-the
minute styles.
Bui the wise shopper thinks of
something more than style. She
also asks herself, "Is this particu
lar style becoming to me? Is it
suited to my type of figure?"
Girls who are shorter or taller
than the average must be pnriicu
larly careful. If you are consider
ably under the average height, you
will not look your best in a dress
that emphnsizes your shortness, no
matter how stylish the dress may
be.
Choosing Your Oress
An old, reliable rule to follow is
this: Siiort girls should wear cloth
lng with up-and-down lines, either
In the cut of the garment or tin de
sign of the goods, while tall girls
should wear ensembles which em
phasize the crosswise lines.
To get some iden on how Impor
tant this rule is, draw two ovals,
shaped like eggs standing on end, on
two different pieces of paper. Then
draw half a dozen up-and-down lines
through ons of them, and draw
cross-wise lines across the other.
The oral with the vertical lines will
look slender, and the one witb the
horizontal lines will seem shorter
and wider. In exnctly the same
way, crosswise stripes will make
you look shorter sad wider; up-and
down stripes will make you look
taller and more slender.
The short girl will look taller If
she wears s braid or curls on top
Of her bead. Her hats should hare
narrow brims, or none nt nil nml
any (outlier or trimming on the bill
should he in an up mid down direc
tion.
If you are shorter than the av
erage, wear a nml idling ensemble,—
that is. wear a skirt that matches
your sweater or blouse, or Is nearly
tlie same color. Of course, puffy
sleeves and any fullness or flare in
the skirt will have the wrong effect.
A good posture, with the hack
straight, the head erect, and the
shoulders thrown hack, will have a
very great effect In making n short
girl look taller and more graceful.
It you are short and are inclined to
have rounded shoulders and back,
learn to sit erect, and take some
sort of exercise to improve your
posture.
Rules for Tall Girls
For the tall girl, the rules are just
the opposite. Wide-brimmed hats
will help make her look shorter;
her hair should be worn close to the
head on top, and can he waved out
ward at the sides. Two-color en
sembles, such as a dark skirt and a
light-colored sweater or blouse, will
etnphnslze the horizontal line at the
waist and decrease her height. Full
ness In the skirt or sleeves will have
the same effect.
Many tall girls unconsciously try
to make themselves smaller by de
veloping a drooping posture, with a
rounded back and sagging ghoul
lera. This Is a grave mistake, be
cause It gives an awkward or sloppy
mpresslon that only makes matters
"torse. An ereet posture will make
four walk and your actions mors
[raceful, sad other persoae will be
eas apt ts nstlee year bstgbt.
