Baker 2627-3 Ave.) Shampooing In previous chapters, we have had the three necessary steps pre pa rat ry to the shampooing-mass aging, brushing and oiling. Correct shampooing is one of the essentials in the care of the scalp and growth of the hair. To shampoo, use clean, soft wa ter or water that that has been treated by a softener, and a good skin soap or a prepared sham poo- Have the water about blood heat in temperature. Wet the hair thoroughly with a spray or wash cloth, then pour enough sham pioo on to make a good lather. Massage the lather through the hair and the Surface of the scalp Spray water through the hair un til dhe water runs perfectly clear. To test for cleanliness, rub a piece of cotton over the scalp—if cotton is soiled, use more shampoo and proceed as before. To dry the hair, use a turkish towel. Ruib the hair briskly, but gently. The hair combs with ease if comb ed while still damp. To take out the snarls easily, begin combing at the ends. -o I Color Prejudice By John Mills Wake up, don’t remain asleep forever. If I were black, white, brown, yellow or red, I owuld not be proud of my color, neither would I despise my color or any other color, for color reasons alone. As it happens, I am light enough in color to see my blue veins: but as yet I have never seen why that should be considered as being any mark of distinction for me. I did not receive my color through any effort, wisdom, brain power or what not of mine. I certainly would deem myself foolish to be joyful about the color that I possess, and I heartily agree with King Solomon: “Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom.” Proverbs 16:21. Sometime ago, I saw in a Ne gro weekly magazine, an article with the eaption“Black—but not Proud of It,” That was, to my way oi thinking, an astounding revela tion of the innermost thoughts of great numbers of Americans that are the descendants of Ham; a people, who to retain their racial identity, accept without a protest, that erroneous appellation—Negro. We Americans of African des cent are not Africans nor Negroes any more than a Creole is a Span iard or a Frenchman, or as the ancient Edomites were not Jews nor Canaan ites. Facts are: all we can claim, of Africa is Ham our forefather; therefore we are Hamericans; thus wo retain our racial identity, an identity which we should be very proud of when considering the his tory of the descendants of Ham. Chicago Defender, is to be found a statement by a lady, of De troit, Michigan, accusing the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority of that city of color prejudices. Hamericans, with color prejud ices, possibly, neveir for a mom ent consider that color does not create wisdom, intelligence, brains nor moral or spiritual values. The question with such people should be, Who and what am I? Where did I come from and where am I going? An excellent illustration of what we portment, etc. A few years ago, I caused a metropolitan newspaper to change its policy of printing “Negro” wit}, a small “n.” I convinced the editor that white, black, brown, yellow or red were common descriptive words or adjectives and when applied to humans was used as defining the color of people or races; but when any word was used to define a whole race of people as ‘‘Negro,” which has within its fold all of these common colors, it is sheer ignorance, or something else, to not recognize the word as a proper noun and should be. capitalized. Another editor informed me that it was their policy to use a cap ital "N" in the word ‘Negro’; but sometimes a small “n" slipped by the proof reader. He also called my attention to the fact that some Negro editors used a small “n” when printing the word "Negro” in their papers.
