Boys, 16, 17, Hanged
In Mississippi For
Murder They Deny
West Point, Miss., Jan 30 (ANP)
—Protesting their innocence al
most with their last breaths, two
young boys, George Owens, 17 and
Joa Phillips, 16, were hanged just
before daybreak Wednesday morn
ing for the murder of Herman
Whatley, white, eccentric Clay
county filling station operator.
There wete about 100 persons in
eluding 1 woman, on the second
floor room of the county jail where
the double execution took place.
‘ I iust want to tell vnu people
that I am innocent of the crime I
am accused of. i don't know any
thing about,” Owns said from the
scnfold. He was the first to go.
“What is done In the dark will
come to light and some day after
poor Owens' dealh and mine, you
will find the murderer,” said Phil

The boys were convicted and
given the death penalty early last
year for having robbed anil killed

store near West Point. Although
'hey protested their Innocence from
their arrest, they were convicted,
the death sentence upheld by the
state supreme court and a plea for
life imprisonment denied by Gov.
Hugh White.

rge W. Wood bey is among the in
teresting members of the Calvary
Baptist church who have passed
heir 80 year marks. Rev. Wcodbey
was born on his master’s farm in
eastern Tennessee, Oct. 5, 1854. He
had the advantage of only two short
terms of pay school before he was
80. He then enrolled in an adult
night school, and attended rain or
shine for eight months.
Rev, Woodbey has always an ar
dent student ever since he learned
to read. '‘The New Testament was
the only book I could get aside from
my two school books. I read it over
and over, and it seemed so wonder
ful to me,” he said with sparkling
eyes. He now has a library of more
than a thousand volumes, and reads
most of the time. He hs written
several bof.s, served as columnist
for white weeklies, and Is authority
of the ancient history of Negro peo
ple.
Rev. Woodbey was called to the
ministry in 1864, and preached his
first sermon in his mother’s house
as there was no church. He organ
ized and pastored the African Rapt
1st church in Wichita, Kas. (now
Calvary) and also Zion Baptist
church in Omaha, He pastored
at Atchison, Kas. and at St. Joseph
Mo, In pioneer days- After coming
to California, Rev. Woodbey poster
ed in Redland and San Diego.
Rev. Woodbey and Mrs. Wood
| bey, his wife, who aLso pastored a
church in Omaha, were employed
by the Prohibition Party as lectur
ers, and served in that capacity
j for nine years, traveling over the
country. Mrs. Woodbey was at one
lime president, and the only Negro
member of the WCTU in Omaha.
He was nominated for lieutenant
governor of Nebraska by the Pro
, hibition Party, and ran for state
! senatorr of his party while W’illiam
Jenning Bryan ran for the same
office in the first district in Nebr
aska.
