Arkansas Would
Change Lynchings
From Nine to Eight
Little Rock, Jan 9 (ANP)—If
the state of Arkansas has its way,
the 1936 total lynching figures re
leased last week by Tuskegee in
stitute will be reduced from nine
to eight. Arkansas wants to throw
one of the two mobbings charged
against the state.
The bone of contention is the
Frank Weems mystery, which came
to light last spring during the cot
ton chopper’s strike in eastern
Arkansas, instigated by the Sou
thern Tenant Farmers union- The
union charged that Weems had been
lynched in Crittenden county for
participation in the strike.
It was while investigating the
sharecropper’s disappearance that
| Miss Willie Sue Blaftden of Mem
phis and the Rev. Claude. Williams
of Little Rock, both white were
flogged Sheriff J. H. Curlin im
n^diatelly declared Weem» was
“alive and will be produced when
the time comes’’ but that time has
not yet come. Supt Albright of
the state rangers investigated the
affairs under direct orders of Gov.
Futrellbut; c«tuld g*et no definite
information.
Miss Marjory Jo Smith is 11 at
the University Hospital.
