FUNCHES, EDITOR Mrs. Bessie Lee remains ill The Hollis Art Club will give a bridge party at the home of Mrs. Ida Giles in the near fu ture. Date will be announced later. Mr. Henry L. Rayuer is con nected with the Independent Coal Co. He is the only Negro salesman in the State of Iowa, and is making good. Mrs. Mary Wilson remains ill at the Nursing Home. The Promotion Club of Tab ernacle Baptist Church was en tertained Dec. 3, by Mrs. Mar tha Wilson. PEW RALLY TO BE GIVEN On Dec. 20, the Mothers’ Board' of the Tabernacle Bap tist Church will give a Pew Ral ly. The invitation is extended to everyone to come out and help . Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stewart of Omaha, were visitors in the John Turner home Saturday, Dec. 12. Promotion Club Gives Dinner The Promotion Club of the Tabernacle Baptist church gave a Harvest Dinner on Thursday, Dec. 17, at the residence of Mrs. L. C. Carbins, 712-7 Ave. Those in charge report the dinner as having been a financial success. Mrs. Antone Iluff is all smiles over a letter she received from her uncle, Mr. Herbert Carper, the first letter in twenty-one years. A play entitled “Mistletoe and llollyberry’’ will be given by the Tabernacle Baptist Sun day School on Christmas even ing. Cast of this play consists of some twety-one persons. LAST RITES FOR JAMES H. HOPE .Funeral servces were held on Sunday,Dec. 13, for Mr. James II. Hope who died Dec. 8, at the Edmondson Hospital, from Jab ernacle Baptist Church. Rev. Geo. White, pastor of the Tab ernacle Church officiated. Bur ial was made in Walnut Hill Cemetery. The deceased is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mattie Turner of this city, and one nephew, Mr. 0. Hawkins of Minneapolis, Minn. Mr. Noah Washington has re turned to his home from the Mercy Hospital. His condition is reported as being good. Mrs. Washington is still in the hos pital. Mr. O. Hawkins of Minneap olis, Minn., arrived in the-city to attend the funeral of his un cle, Mr. James H. Hope. Mrs. Josie Carbins, 712-7th Ave., was re-elected president of the Promotion Club at its meeting Wednesday, Dec. 9. Mrs. Minnie Wiggins of Chi cago, arrived in the city Dec. 9 to attend the funeral of Mr. James H. Hope. Mrs. Geraldie Haynes was a dinner guest of Miss Lula Mae Hall Thursday, Dec. 10. Mr Langston Parks, student of Parsons College, of Parsons, Kansas, will spend Christmas in the city. Mr. Parks is an all conferenee half-back. .Rev. S. Fant entertained at dinner Sunday Dec. 13, in cele bration of the birthday of Mrs. Wm. Harvey. Enjoying Rev. Fantls hospitality wede some fourteen persons. Mr. Fred Reeves wdio recent ly suffered an attack of pleur isy, is able to be out again. Rev. Joseph Gates has been called to pastor Mt. Nebo Bap tist Church in Omaha. Mlidred Mitchell and Esther Beckman were the winners in the amateur contest the past Friday night at Bethel Center. Will Entertain Mr.and Mrs. Jefferson Simms will entertain at dinner Xmas Day. MARRIED Dr. Chavis and Mrs. Non neuce Gibson of Chicago, were married by Rev. George W. Sla ter jr., on Thursday, Dec. 10th. Mrs. Gibson was formerly of Omaha. i Mr. John Mock is out of the hospital. Word comes from Robert Herndon who is now a member of the 2i)t.h Infantry located at Ft. Huachuchua, Arizona, that he is enjoying both his soldier life and the sight of so many pretty girls to be seen there. Co-operative Club To Buy The Cooperative Club is plan ning to purchase for members and others who desire Christ mas fruits, candies and meats at advantageous prices. Miss Lrnla Mae Hall was in charge of the program given at the Broadway Christian church of which Rev. Cooley is pastor, on Dec. 16th. Mrs Means Again Winner Mrs. Hazel Means was again winner in the rally now going on at Bethel Church. The Christmas program on Sunday, Dec. 20, will end the drive. The one who has raised the most money during the entire drive will receive a special prize. Carter returned Saturday from Memphis, Tenn., wilier0 lie attended the Church of Cod Convocation. Elder Carter was fortunate in that he left the meeting th® day before fire swept the wood en structure where the service* were held. More than 5,000 per sons were panic-stricken—a charred body was later found in the ruins. Attending the Convocation were several Omaha delegates. Tine Cleverettes held a called meeting Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. Maderia llarvcy to complete plans for their win ter festival on Dec. 29. Fant has resigned the pastorate of the Calvary Bap tist Church. At present no one has been called to fill the va cancy. Mrs. Noah Washington, who has been confined to the Mercy Hospital because of injuries re ceived several days ago, return ed to her home Sunday. While in the hospital it was found ne cessary to remove one of Mrs. Washington’s eyes. Her condi tion is reported as being good. Tabernacle Mission Circle met with .Mrs. Cooper Friday, Dec. 18. Mr. Charles Reddick, member of the U. S. navy, is expected home for the holidays. The 20 Century Civic and Art Club will give a cake raffle Friday, Dec. 18, at' the home of Mrs. Gertrude Carbins. A local orchestra will furnish music at Bethel Church Sun day night, Dec. 20. Come out and encourage the boys by your presence. Mrs. Florence Jones of Oma ha, spent Sunday in the city visiting her daughters, Mrs. Rosa Harris and Mrs. Della Henderson. Mrs. Georgia Ross is indis posed. Saturday, Mr. Stovall was accosted by two strange race men who pretended to be try ing to locate an aunt who had come here from Missouri Val ley and Stovall is reported to have been seen walking be tween the two strangers in the uptown district. When he left the strangers, Stovall discover ed that lifis purse containing some twenty-one dollars was gone. And we find hm a poor er but wiser man. These “con” men had ap proached Miss Lula Mae Hall and Rev. Slater, both of whom proved to be too busy to take much time with them.
