,vuranm ' ^ngm|| v An award of $50.00 is made each year by the Founda tion to the Negro or any Negro group for the best paper submitted on an improved method of beauty culture. St- Louis, Mo , Oct .8—Winner of the $50 award offered by the Lari euse Beauty Fouadation l!or the b<"st paper on an improved method of beauty culture will be announc e<l December 1, according to the director of the foundation Papers received at the organiza-, tion’s office, 611 Locust street, be fore that date will still be eligi-1 ble for the award, it was pointed ^ out- Suggestions submitted for the award may deal wih any phase of beauty culture “The number of entries we have received from all parts of the coun try indicates the increasing inter est of women everywhere in pre serving and enhancing their natur al beauty," the director said The Larieuse Beauty Founda tion was established last spring by the Oxiefroy Manufacturing Co- to “encourage contribution of suggestions from the Negro public on the subject of beauty culture " All beauty suggestions received by the foundation are tested in a mod ern laboratory before being made available to the public In a recent column, we learned, easily-broken fingernails can us-1 ually be made strong and pliant if, they are soaked regularly in warm olive oil- Since a great many wo- | men have expressed interest in' that helpful beauty hint, we’ll de vote this column to some more in formation about the care of finger nails.. Of course, we should never use a metal file in cleaning the nails The sharp steel point gouges the skin under the nail, frequently leaving a black line that will not grow out It is best to use an orangewood stick to keep the nails clean As an added iprecaution, some women wrap a bit of cloth or cotton around the end of the stick if is unsually sharp.. The cloth can b? vi: ted around the end of the stick to leave a point that is sharp en ough to chan the crevious of the nails Household duties often stain the underside of the nails, making them look dirty and ill-kept no matter how carefully we clean them In this case, we must beach the under side of the nails, either with a reg ular bleachng cream, which you can purchase at your drugstore, or with some similar preparation Although lemon juice will help bleach the nails somewhat, especi ally if the stain is light, usua’ly a more active hleach is needed One of the best mthods is to soak the hands in a teacup of water in which six or eight drops f peroxide has been placed- The hands may be soaked in this solution a few min utes after you finish washing dish es of the evening meal Ha^grails should be given care t'i'1 attention to prevent their be coming infected If the hands are staked in olive oil occasionally to keep the skin smooth, and if the cuticle is pushed back carefully, thero will be less tendency for the troublesome hangnails to develop If they do, they should be clipped dqwn as dose to the skin as pos sili’e with a pair of scissors, and alcohol or some other antiseptic should be rubbed over the broken skin to prevent infection Massaging the fingertips ocas ;i on ally with the fingers of the other hand will help keep the nails and cuticle healthy, and will stimu ate the circulation of the blood un der the nails to give them a heal thy, pinkish tint- The massaging can be done at intervals through | ou)i the day The cuticle can be gently pushed back, and the mantle of skin on each side of the finger nail stroked in a forward direction This has the advantage of giving the fingertips a more tapering appearance, as well as keeping the nails healthier. MAXIE MILLER WRITES | (For the Literary Service Bureau) Maxie Miller; I am a girl 20 and my mother is 35- I have a boy fri end. 40, a.nd now my own mother goes to work and falls in love with him. She tells me so and says that I am young and I ought to let her have him and catch me another man. This man knows about it and says he loves us both but doesn’t know which one he loves best- He says wo will have to decide which one will marry him. I am disgusted but I still love tho man 1 am disgusted with my mother, too. But, she believes the.' old saying; “AU is fair in love and war.” 1 don’t know what to do. Will you please tell me?—Nellie Nellie: Thi situation you present is more ludicrous than serious. There is something wrong with this man, and while I do not want to wish him off on your moaher, I am inclined to advise you to let her have him- Perhaps it would not be long before she would wish you had not surrendered. But, since you are young with many opportunities before you, and since this man is a simpleton, you ] would do yourself a favor if you would drop him and let just any body have him —Maxie. COBB “A Rose By Any Other Name-” By IRVIN S. COBB AT A closely contested municipal election in New York the Tammany ^ ticket seemed in grave danger. Accordingly suitatde steps were taken. Scarcely had the polls opened when a group of trained and /'SoiTE>ay~'\ experienced repeaters marched into a down-town voting place. “What name?" inquired the election clerk of the leader of the squad, who was red-haired and freckled and had a black eye! The young gangster g'anced down at a slip of paper in his hand, to refresh his memory. “Isadore Mendelheim,” he said then. “That’s not your real name, and you know it! said a suspicious challenger for the rpform ticket. “It is me name,” said the repeater, “and I’m gom to vote under it — see?” From down the line cam® a voice! / "Don’t let that guy bluff you, Casey. Soitinly jour name is Mendelheim!” (American New. Feature., Inc.) RE-ELECT JUDGE LESTER PALMER Judge Lester Palmer is a candidate for reelection and is a real friend of the colored people.
