By Randy Taylor One of the many rumors going the rounds is that Ralph Metcalfe is to turn profssional and join Jesse Owens in a world-wide tour. The two, possibly the greatest sprinters the world hfas ever seen, will engage in match races. This news is of special interest from ttwo angles. Finst great crowds will be assured because it will be known that the incompar able Owens will be pitted against no set up and secondly, it will de • finitely settle one question, who is the greater aprinter? Notwith standing the superlative perform ance of Jesse Owens at Berlin, there are quite a few dyed-in-the wool track fans who are of the op inion that no sprinter in the world oan consistently defeat Ralph Met calfe. I truly hope that this rumor is true, aside from satisfying the ap petites of the fanis, it will give two truly great Negro athletes an Opportunity to capitalize on their athletic prowness. It is indeed a sad commentary that so few Ne gro athletes, no matter how great, have been able to reap the bene fit of their efforts. Aside from the amazing Fritz Pollard of Brown, Paul Robson of Rutgers and pos sibly Duke Slater of Iowa, it is fairly safe to say that the other Negro athletes have been denied the financial renumeration that should have been their just due. Jesse Owens, the quadruple Oly mpic champion, is in New York at ipresent. He and his manager, Mar ty Forkins are weighing the many professional offers in an attempt to get those which are most bene ficial. We are all rooting for Jesse and Ijope that he gets every thing due him. Ran into Eddie Tolan, hero of the Olympias at Los Angeles in ‘32, on Seventh avenue the other day. If according to certain ru mors, Eddie plans to compete in an exhibition tour of the country J against Jessee Owens, he will have lots of hard work getting down to running shape as he weighs 30 pounds more than his 1932 running form. That sterling athlete Ralph Met calfo has been appointed Director of the Department of Physical Ed uation at Xavier in New Orleans. This is a fine step as Metcalfe, because of his fine leadership qualifies, should be able to deve lop the wealth of raw material to be found at that far Southern in stitution, into potential track win ners for America in 1940 at Tokio. Football officials were assigned to games and schedules completed at the annual mteting of the " Southwestern Association of Coa ches and Officials, held at the Y. M. C. A., Dallas, Tex., Sept. 12. Examination of Officials, the first ever held in a Negro officials organization were introduced and taken by all offcials expecting to officiate in the games of the Southwest conference Coaches from Arkansas State Langstjon, Texas, Bshop, Wiley Sam Houston, Prairie View, Sou thern, Jarvis, and Xavier. Offici als from Oklahoma, Ark., Louis iana. Texas and Kansas were re presented. Coach Matty Boll, of Southern Methodist university, Dallas, Tex. gave a short talk on the major changes in the football rules for 1936. The Brown Bombers, Negro pro fessional football team of New York City are hard ait training with all the signs pointing to an other groat season. Ably coached of Brown university, the “Bom-; bers” will attempt to better their 1935 record which cortsisted of 10 victries and 2 defeats. Joe halliard, formerly of the Chicago Cardinals and considered one of the greatest football players in professions^ ranks, white or black, will be back to lead the team. It is unfortunate that Negro football enthusiasts throughout tihie land will be un able to see the “Bombers” in ac tion. Attendance to the “Bombers” games last season was not promp ted by race ctnsciousnefcs but by the knowledge that one would see high class football played. I Ithica, N. Y.—INP)— Big Jim Holland is the boy that Coach Snavely hopes to groom for the climax threat at halfback for Cor nell university this fall. The big boy hails from an up-state New Fork high school. As a fretshman last year he was a sensation and the Cornell grads that saw him in action began to | say, “happy days are here again” | 4or he reminded them of the days Eddie Kaw ’and George Pfann. J.—(INP) —Joe Louis certainly has covered a lot of tendtory during the short time he has been fighting profes sionally.. When he tangled with A1 Ettore in Philadelphia’s Muni cipal Stadium on September 22, the Bomber has fought in 11 dif ferent cities since he made his pro fessional debut in Chicago on July 4, 1934. He also has fought in New York, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Flint, Peoria, Dayton, K-alamiazoo, Lftfs Angeles and San Francisco. On an exhibition tour last fall, he ap peared in Toronto, Montreal, Que bec, Portand, Augusta, Bangor; Waterbury and Providence. Robert son and his wife, Annie. The 1 cop shot his wife to death in their Edgecombe apartment Saturday afternoon. The man then shot himself to death be fore officers arrived. Robert son, a familiar figure on 7th Ave., where he patrolled from 139th to 142nd St., was from Alabama. His wife was from the West Indies. They had been married 13 years, and Mrs. Robertson had a son 19, by a former marriage. She was six years older than Robertson, be ing 45. There was no clearcUt, reason for the double tragedy, many friends saying the wife was a “nagger’’ and the cop got tired of it. Mr. Robertson was buried in Brooklyn Wed nesday and the wife in Long Island City by the side of her first husband. Robertson had been on the force ten years, and was a w'orld war veteran. His aim on his wife was perfecl —twice through the right breast, and twice through the left side while he was sitting, and she attempting to run.
